I, personally, like mysteries so I stick mostly to those. I have read so many good ones that I don't know which ones to tell you about. I don't go to the library and I don't know that they have my type of books there, but I imagine they do. I like the mystery books that have a love story line to them too.
I buy my books at garage sales or at the second hand book store close to me. I only pay about a dollar per book and when I have three books I can trade them in at the second hand book store and get one free one for every three I bring in. So what I do is when people offer me, friends, a book and even if I don't like it, I take it and trade them in for the kind I do like. So I don't spend much per year on books, maybe $10.

hi graceandowen. i have read some books myself, both reality and fiction based. you mentioned you like things that have a basis on true life so i would like to recommend "tuesdays with morrie" or "the diary of a young woman" by anne frank. i forgot who wrote the first one but i do believe that both of them are quite famous books and you would not have any problems looking for them.

My favorite book ever is called 'Eart Abides'. It is a realistic fiction piece written in the 40's. The idea is the world is wiped out by some kind of virus. The story follows a man and his rebuilding of the society. It really is rather interesting to see what happens and how different people act in certain ways and how mankind resorts to methods and techniques as they rebuild their society.

You might have to buy this as it's a set, but by all means check if
they have it at the library. Title: His Dark Materials, by Philip
Pullman, and the set comprises Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife
and The Amber Spyglass. It has won a lot of awards, and been compared
to Lord of The Rings. Interestingly enough, Philip Pullman made his
name as a writer of childrens books, and this falls into that category
only if you consider fantasy novels to be childrens books. Very well
written, and you will enjoy the fast pace of the narrative.

do you like running or jogging? i find the book on Sebastian Coe (one of the greatest middle distance runner UK had ever produced) a good read. The title is 'Born to Run'. i find it inspiring during my younger days as i loved running. can finish the the book within 1-2 days.
