I've had the same computer for about 2 years. It's in my living room. I live in the country and have 2 dogs.
My computer starting shutting down on me on it's own every once in while and I was starting to get worried. Computers aren't cheap!
Well, I found the problem! I guess I've been lazy and haven't cleaned my computer tower for about a year. I opened the side of it and found all kinds of dust bunnies made of sand and dog hair! Oh my gosh! What a fire hazzard! I'm so lucky it didn't start a fire!
I took the vacuum to it and it is now dust, hair, and dirt free! The fans are also working now.
How often do you clean the inside of your computer tower? Are you shocked at how much dirt gets into there?

Well I clean mine once every 3-4 months... Just when you clean it try to avoid things like little brushes and some times vacuums too... They might cause static electricity and there is a possibility (a slight possibility though, but why taking the risk :)) something inside your tower could "burn"... try blowing the dust out and then take the vaccum and clean it from the floor :)

Good point! I never thought of static electricity! As slight as that chance may be computers aren't cheap to replace!

My old machine is 4 years old.
It was running quite OK till recently. For 3 months my machine was locked away as my final graduation exams were there. 10 days back when the exams were over I started assembling the pieces of my computer. To my surprise the machine just did not boot. It started with a whirling of the hard drive (sound was audible). Then restarted. I was baffled. Then I gathered some courage and opened the cabinet. There I found a lot of cobwebs. Got it cleaned. Still no result. Then changed the power connection to another power socket. Now it worked.

Well for your surprise...
My PC capinet, or CPU case is always open with all the machinery in front of my eyes...
as my brother is computer engineer, we very often work with changing hard disks and other stuffs...
so whatever dust get collected there, its in front of us, and we clean it out whenever we think it gettin gcollected there.

That's half my problem, the tower is tucked in under my desk, I don't even see it really so I never think of it.
Thanks for your response!

Yeah, the computers can attract dust particles very easily and also lose it very hard. Hmm, i also lazy to clean it really, i guess i will clean it if the fans is not working. Because open the casing is very troublesome

I think that's what happened to our old pc
we have 2 pcs, one is 3 yrs old the other is older
the older one just shut down on its own one day and we went frantic trying to find out what happened
we did open the case and it was full of pet hairs and dust like yours
but after cleaning it we still couldn't turn it on
now it's just lying there we plan to send it to a friend who is technician
when we have some money to pay it

Computers are dust magnets! I clean mine just whenever I think of it and every time it really is amazing how much crap builds up in there. Also, a lot of people don't know that if you set your tower on the floor the dust is worse. I use the vacuum when it's really bad. But, when it's not too bad I go to like Wal-mart or Staples and get the dust remover spray found in the electronics. It works miracles! It's quick and easy. And, it's fun to play with. If you spray it on your finger or something it will literally take all the oils off of the spot you spray...it feels weird. Anyways, my point is try that stuff then you don't have to drag the vacuum out as often and it the spray works well. Sometimes however it is pricey but the generic works just as good as the name brand and is much cheaper. I even go ahead and buy two cans at one time because they do awesome deal on that. Congrats on your great cleaning job!

Thanks! I'm really glad it was me that cleaned it not someone else, that would have been embarassing!
I think I will get the dust remover spray, even if it's just to play with it :)
