Adding signature links

A while ago I asked the question as to how to add signature and was told that you can add them in your profile. Well I have looked there a few times and cannot find a link to add a signature or an avatar picture. Another question is where can you get the emoticons to brighten up your post? So will someone be a little more descriptive and point the way. Thanks in anticipation.
