More Job Losses for My City

My city has been struggling for some time now due to so many jobs shutting down. Almost on a daily basis we hear of new places closing their doors or laying off workers. Yesterday it was announced that the city of Dayton is in such dire straits that 500 city workers will be offered a buyout due to the fact that the money just will not be there to afford them any longer. I am sure that many other areas are experiencing a similar situation, but I worry about how people will survive without jobs. It has been shown over and over again that poverty breeds crime and I'm afraid our already high crime rate will only escalate with so many people out of work. People are not just going to sit back and allow their families to go hungry or without the essentials of everyday life. What I would like to know is how your city is weathering this storm.http://www.daytondailynews.com/n/content/oh/story/news/local/2008/10/02/ddn100208buyoutweb.html?imw=Y

Our city's on slow decay mode. I suspect it will speed up as soon as winter hits.
Right now there's hardly any jobs for the unemployed to take on, to replace the ones they had. My Mom can't find work, alot of the people she knows can't find work.
And this city is surrounded by rural country, farms and such...so alot of people are fleeing the city to head to the country. (We're going BACK to the country, my family, actually)
After all, why steal the essentials for your family when I you can get them from nature and live far enough from people so you don't have to worry about being stolen from?
Earlier this year a few cities were already practically war zones because of bad economic situations...alot of cities became ghost towns for the very same reasons.
And plus there's been increasing numbers of tent cities of homeless people due to the foreclosures...
ALOT of pots are on the stove and it's only a matter of time before they boil over.

The country seems to be where everything's at all the sudden!
Did you know that the only properties going up in value or in the country now? Before all this, living in the country or working in the country was never profitable or at least...hardly financially smart when other means could get you money quicker.
But that's all different now. I think that might be one of the good trends.
We've only been away from the country for close to two years but we've really missed the country too. There really is nothing like it.
I hope your city doesn't go downhill too badly, dearie -- at least unless you can get somewhere better, huh?
I dunno, I've been hearing alot about various places in Ohio. It makes me wonder what our state will look like in a couple of years, you know?

I couldn't agree more, xParanoiax. I think it is a good move for your family to make because there is nothing wrong with living off the land. I grew up in the country and wish I was there still.

My city has been struglling for months because so many jobs are shutting down as well. I have no idea what the government is going to do about the high unemployment rate, or maybe they will just do not a thing about it, since all they do is just some bunch of stupid things that will actually harm the nation. I am currently unemployed right now, and I have been digging here and there just so I can simply get a job, as a dishwasher or bagger or cashier, or pretty much anything, even the job that pays me the minimum wage, I still couldn't even get a job -_-;; I really have no idea how I am going to at least pay my credit card bills, when I don't even have a single penny to block it off, and plus, the gas prices are rising, going up like crazy. Maybe the government doesn't want the lower class to survive? I don't know... well hope something will at least happen that will turn the tide :)

Hi world,
Its a terryfing thing to read really! Here in India when we talk about America we believe that its the land of oppurtunity. We think that everything is so great in that part of the world.
Actually its more becoz of American Govt. They are interested to invest so much in war but not for their tax payers. Thye are so interested in whats going in other countries while thier own people are getting un employed.
Iam very sorry to say that if things go like these ... there will be time when Americans will go to other nations for work and for financial support.
Cheers,
Tutul

What you say is mostly true, tutul. I think that our government has forgotten about its people while they pursue their interests in foreign lands. The people are growing more disenchanted with the way things are with each passing day.

Sorry to say this, but your thoughts would've been right if it was like at least a decade ago. But now anymore. Yeah, we still have some more opportunity or freedom than any other countries, but American government is not even giving a rat's @$$ about citizens in this country. Get this, the government will only care about taking some extra money off of us by making us pay more taxes, and they will leave us alone for a while, and come back next month, making us pay more taxes. If we do pay them, then sure, they'll leave us alone. But if we don't, like if we pay like maybe a penny less than how much we're supposed to pay, they WILL take you down... punish you or something like that. That, everyone should know, is what the government does. They do not ever give a rat's @$$ about you, as long as they have your money. Cheers :)

All I can say is that it's a good thing that my husband is close to retiring from the school system there.. But if it would be better if he could get a part time job out here, but my daughter and I have been trying for a year to get something and nothing is opening or if it is opened, we don't get the job..

Right now, there is no news that city workers here are at risk for losing jobs. It is more of a gas shortage in Western North Carolina that is cutting hours that everyone works for now. I wish there was a way for the workers to keep their jobs. It is going to be hard for them to find jobs if businesses are shutting down. Maybe going to the nearest town for work can help, but I don't know how the gas prices are in your area.

Gas prices have actually gone down quite a bit lately, beccasthoughts. I heard on the news yesterday that one place was selling gas for less than$3.00 per gallon. I don't know how long it will last though.

Your area is at least better than the area that I live in, because almost everyone's struggling to get a job. Most of my classmates in college do have jobs, as most of them are all adults, and have been keeping the same job for a few years. Well, I don't know how high your gas price is in your area, but how does $4.00/gallon sound on average?

I think right now that's common just about everywhere. I lost my job yesterday after being there for 13 years. I'm still in the "shock" state even though we had 3 months notice. We had two plants close in the last week. When it's all said and done there is about 400 of us outta work. Like many of our Canadian plants the business is moving to the U.S. All you can do is look for another job and hope one comes along with a decent salary and benefits.

I was wondering Do you really want a job where you have to rely on making money for the rest of your life? I hope you are willing to open up what I am about to say but ever heard of "passive and/or rsidual income"?
It's those things where once you started something, more money will come to you where you don't need to put it too much effort into it compare to in the beginning.
I like being able to make income working at home since I am a stay at home mom myself.
I will also start school online kind of thing on the 13th which is somewhat like giving myself a present there (my b day is on the 10h and I am not looking forward to it since it reminded me that I haven't accomplish much of my goals in life. Very depressing there).
The reason why I join this particular online school is because they give you a free laptop and webcam which will be shipped to your residence.
They even have international students and it's great being able to earn a degree while at home. I am also a freelance writer. For a long time, I kept putting it off. Now, I wish I had started it way earlier. I already reach the payout thing at ehow. Loving it. One lady on there made close to $900 and they give passive income.

I am sorry about the loss of your job, pinkpassion. Things are indeed dire. Just after I posted this discussion the major automobile plant announced they will be closing on December 23rd. Some Christmas, huh? Especually since the workers thought they had at least a couple more years before the plant was to close.

I'm afraid, Thoroughrob, that it's going to get much worse before it gets better! We have not yet felt the full impact of the financial disaster yet.

So far we are very fortunate and lucky where I live. I am thankful for my job and the area I live in. I am in Texas and articles have said we should do ok throughout this hard time. I am considering going back to school as well to help our situation. I am at my job every day ever since coming off of medical leave and working hard.

Our city struggles also because there is nothing here. there is only one major plant here. they do not want anything else here. It is ridiculous. We are not from here but moved here ten years ago. We never knew there would be no opportunities here. We worked at the plant for three years and it was a pure joke.

I'm sorry to hear that, stephcjh. The greatest contributor to our local economey was the automobile industry. Sadly, with the closing of a plant scheduled for Dec. 23rd they will all be gone.

I give my sympathy to you. It is because of economic crisis there. I feel sad that even a country like yours is now suffering in job shortage. Here in the philippines, a lot of outsourcing company is also having a retrench and that is because of the economic issue in the United States.
Cheers... ehehe. I know soon more jobs will be open, hopefully.

I was listening to the radio a couple of nights ago, aRiS, and the guest on there who was British said, "It is well known that when America sneezes the rest of the world catches cold." I guess that about sums it up.

I think the effects of the Global Slowdown is beginning to show up on your city. I think here in India itself which is more or less unaffected till now, we are beginning to see signs as the number of job openings are closing real fast. The fresh graduates are finding it difficult to find new jobs.
Hope this scenario changes and changes quickly.
Cheers!

though i am not US but we experience those kinds of things before and i think that we still experience it still but not as bad though as before. but now in USA, we can see things are getting from bad to worse. This is unbelievable thing cause as we all know that USA is known to be the land of milk of honey and land of opportunities. but it looks like that the US is losing these titles already. it is bad to see these things happening in the most progressive nation in the world.

I liken our situation to someone who has fallen asleep at the wheel, hotsummer. The greed of some of my country's leaders can be blamed largely for the spot we are now in.

It's the same here, jobs and companies are shutting down every week it started here with West Point Stevens, closing all it plants it was the number one employer in our area now it no longer exists. The company I work for announced on the 16th of September that they will be closing the end of this year. I will be out of a job for the second time in my career of working. I am not old enough to retire yet, but too old to be out competing and looking for another job. I do pray for all of us because we are going to need it.

I just moved to Silicon Valley and as far as I can tell they seem to be doing alright here. This is a rather rich area of California which means nice neighborhoods and high rent (unfortunately). My problem now is getting a job myself since we moved here for my husband's job.

I think that more and more people will soon be out of jobs and that it is going to lead to more crime. I do not like the way things are going at all. I am a member on several forums and it seems that quite a few of them are talking about crime and job losses! Some even mentioned that everything from food to tools and tv's were taken. It is going to get much worse.
