Do you look VERY CLOSELY at your bills before paying?

I do. And I have to say that I am extremely disgusted right now. Two months in a row I have caught "extra" charges on my phone bill for "voice mail" services. I have voice mail through my phone company, which is part of my phone plan. These were "extra" services through a 3rd party billing. They claim I accepted the offer via the internet. Now, I do surveys through some GPT sites, but I also click "no thanks" to all the extra offers, so somehow they are capturing my info anyway. Thankfully, both companies have been gracious in reversing charges but it just makes me so mad. This should not be allowed. Anyone could give my email and phone # out on these sites. I'm sure that's why they are so quick to refund. But I wonder how many people just keep paying their bills without ever looking at them and getting scammed by these companies. It's disgusting...

Yes, I sure do. I have noticed that prices seem to go up so much. So, I always look and observe what I am paying for. I don't want to give a company too much money for something that I am not responsible for. I will look and be aware of this.

Good for you! You know, just the $$ amount alone would not have really alerted me to this charge because it's within the normal "range" due to having our cell phones and internet on the same bill. So, looking closely is very important. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

You know, I didn't for a while when I first turned 18 or so and began to take on my own financial responsibility; I have to admit I was paying for a cell phone bill that had on it a ton of extra features that I never used. Once I sat down and took the time one day to look at that bill, I changed my perspective on that specific bill, and on all of my bills in general. I check credit card statements and put them against my purchases, make sure I am only paying for the things that I use on all amenities, like phone or cable. It just makes me feel more comfortable to know exactly what I am paying for and not have extra charges anywhere on bills, especially with the crunch of today'e economy, as well as my wife and my personal budgets.

Thanks for responding. I think we all ignored it when we were younger! Well, most of us anyway. Credit card bills are another one that can get you for things you didn't sign up for. Especially in this day and age with credit card theft/fraud. I don't see why anyone should get more than is due to them of my hard earned money unless I choose to give it!

I do if the amount doesn't seem ordinary on utility bills, and on my credit card statement I always read through. It's a good thing, too, I caught a charge for a $116 phone call from when I was in the UK. I did make a phone call, but there's no way I talked for long enough to accumulate $116 worth of charges. I called Mastercard and the company that charged me and they refunded every penny when I disputed the amount.
If I hadn't read it, I would have just assumed that the $100 was from me estimating foreign exchange wrong while on my trip.

I honestly dont pay much attention when my bills come in. The only page i actually look at is the one with the amount due. I guess I really should keep an eye out to make sure that some company isnt profiting off of my not scanning my bills.

Thanks for your response. Yes, you really should look at them. There are often extras that get added on that we don't need/want and we end up paying for them even if we don't ask for them. I also call my phone company periodically to see if the bill can be lowered. It's amazing how almost every time I've called they have had a less expensive plan now available. But, if you don't ask, you pay the old, higher price.

I do look very closely to my bills as well. Just curious on how and why I got that amount. As well as to see when is the due date and how much my bill increases compare to my previous bills. I think it was quite important to look closely to your bill just to know why you got that charges just like what you did. If you didn't look at it closely, you wouldn't know the extra charges that you didn't even used and reflected to your bill. Really good thing that you did that and the company have been gracious about it. Anyway, thanks for sharing this experience to us, quite learned a lesson from this.

I do not have the habit of scrutinizing each trasaction in the bill. All I see is the final figure that I am supposed to pay. Now that you've highlighted this I have to be more observant next time. I might have been a victim of cheaters all this while without realizing it. I trusted the bills that come by each month as they are all computerized and did not think of big sharks out there waiting for ignorant and trusting person like me. I will be more careful the next time around. thanks for the info.

MY hubby is the one in-charge in all bills. All I do is spend..hehe. But seriously, he is the one paying all the bills through internet. I knew he is good with that so I leave it to him. He pay bills, and I buy what we need. He checked each bill first to see how and why it came out that high or low and if he is satisfied he would pay it right away. He doesn't want to pay any bills late.

Good thing you have read it and know what it is for. Others will be still be looking at it but still pay for it because they don't know what it means.
Good for me I don't have telephone bills to look at. I only have electric and water bills to read.
Have a nice day!

All the time. There are so many people out there ripping us off and it's not until we look closely we realise how much. Just last year similar to you infact we had an extra charge added on to our phone bill...it was for £79. We couldn't understand how one phone call could have notched up such a cost unless it was an international call. Anyway after getting in touch with our phone line provider they confirmed that it was an international call and the call had in actual fact been made to a passenger on board a cruise ship.
It couldn't have been more unlikely to have been us that had carried out this call. We never phone anyone abroad and to a cruise ship was out of the question...we didn't even know anyone on board a cruise at the time.
After setting the record straight with our service provider they were unwilling to cancel the charge and as we had no proof to show it wasn't us that made the call we had to pay for it. Ever since this we make it imperitive we check the bill. Infact that goes for anything even bank statements get a rigourous check through now with a calculator just to make extra certain everythings in order.

All the time, especially with my phone bill. Sometimes some items crop up that aren't quite explained in the bill's details. I clarify them with my phone company right away. Sometimes, I'd get a reversal of charges. Other times, the charges stay, but at least I get the satisfaction of knowing what they were for.
