My 16 year old son is asking permission that he be allowed to go to Korea this summer vacation(Our summer here is mid March-April-May)with his Korean classmates. We have been allowing our children to travel alone when they were 13 years old. but it was just within the Philippines and with close relatives. It is the first time that he is asking permission to go abroad with a friend. Will it be a good idea? Im sure Seoul is a very nice place, but I cant help but worry. What do you think?

I have been to South Korea in September 2007 on company trip. It's really a nice place and it's quite safe for foreign tourists in Seoul urban area. Since your son is going with his classmates, I think it shouldn't be a problem because they can take care of each other. But the people could hardly speak other language other than Korean. So, you should advise him to learn some basic converstation before he go there.

You are most welcome. Not only Korean, several other Asian country could hardly communicate in English in general. Like Japan, Thailand and etc. So, it's better to get ourselves prepared by learning some basic conversation before departure. I think since your son is going along with his Korean classmate, I don't see any problem with it. He will be the best tour guide over there. Nothing to worry, except your son is forbidden to eat any food. Basically Korean has no limitation in food, they could even consume raw sea food like Japanese.
