How often do you use a styling gel? Are there any disadvantages?

It is sometimes better to have a nice haircut and with a styling gel it also helps to add a style to it. Some of my friends are using it and I know that it can cause itchiness to your scalp. In my own opinion, it may also cause early baldness.
Is this true? Do you use a styling gel? Do you use it occasionally?
What are the other disadvantages?

I prefer to use mousse. Gel is more sticky and ends up making my hair hard.

I'm a girl and I don't like to put styling gel on my hair simply because I don't like the sticky and oily feel of it sometimes. But I have noticed it's usually the guys who use styling gels. It can be neat but I still don't like it if my bf puts styling gel on his hair either. I just want things the natural way. =)
