Banig is a handwoven mat usually used for sleeping. Technically, it is not a textile. Depending on the region of the Philippines, the mat is made of palm (buri), pandan or sea grass leaves. The leaves are dried, usually dyed, then cut into strips and then woven into mats which could be plain or intricate.A Province in the Philippines which is famous for intricately designed mats is Samar where the mats are usually made of pandan leaves dyed green, then different colored buri strips are inserted into the plaits to make the design.

The last time our family used the banig was when we were still in Panay, that was 18 years ago. We had a kubo separate from the bungalow we lived. There we used mats to take rests and naps. It's better but it's expensive now. Have a happy Sunday dong!

We do have banig or mat in the house. We actually have two but because we seldom use we gave away the other one to my sister who loves to sleep on the floor while watching the T.V. We don't normally use the mat at home but do spread it at times when there are visitors that can't be accommodated anymore by the extra room in our house. So they have to sleep in the living room using the mat. We also do bring this mat during picnics so we can spread over the grass to take a rest or nap after feasting on the food. It's a nice feeling to sleep on the mat while looking at the naked sky.

Yes, my grandmother still use the Banig in the province. But the best banig maker is in vigan and samar. I love to sleep on it because its not that too warm not like the mattress made of foam. And being in the province every vacation is really a wonderful experience for me.

We never really used banig. I like it well enough whenever I have to sit on one. It's cool to the skin, but quite flat and hard so after a while my legs start to hurt. I guess you just need to get used to sitting on a banig because it doesn't give you any cushioning at all. Over the years I've found that banig makes a very good sunshade. You prop it up against an open window in order to block of the sun. At the same time, you still get ventilation because of the way the banig is woven. :)

I would love to have one now. I recently watched the south spot show and they showed these very very colorful banigs. There was even these banig dresses. We used to have when we were little. Our nannies were all from the camotes island and Baybay Leyte. I think banigs are made there. They bring banigs with our names on it in the middle when they come back. We were so excited whenever they come back from vacation,we expect new banigs.

We do still use Banig. During weekend, my kids will sleep in our room. To conserve using electricity of air conditioner, ill top carpet with banig to indirect the body to the floor. They love sleeping in our room because they 're allowed to watch tv on weekends. Weekdays go back to their room.
I have also spare banig, i always put in car compartment, readiness every time we travel long distance.

We still have a banig in our house, it was a three year old banig which was given by my auntie. My mom used it before because she said it is much cooler to sleep on banig rather than on her bed. But now she can't use it as often as before, she had a back pain and can't sleep on banig anymore. But we still keep her banig because she said if she will feel better and the pain has gone she will use her banig again. She do love to sleep on banig.

Hey dong! We still have banigs here in the house. I usually use the banig when I have friends over. Instead of sleeping bags, we have banig to sleep on. The ones we have here are made of buri and are really plain. Not much design but it serves its purpose.

yes we still do but mostly on out doors activity. picnic and stuff like that. when we watch kite flying too. at home we use comforter at the floor if we want to lie down or we use the rubber mats that are like jigzaw puzzle. it is easy to carry banig than those jigzaw puzzle rubber mats so we still use banig when we go out on a picnic.

Hi dong!
We still use banig. We often use this when we are in the beach or at times when we go out for a picnic. It is a very handy mat that you can bring just anywhere. There are times when we would go camping and we would use a banig. I remember when I was younger, we even had some plastic banigs.

We do not have banig here -- the ones made of buri, but I could remember that I always like it since it is cooler compared to the thick mattresses though not as soft as those mattresses.
