Have you met your favourite author?

I've been reading the Dragonriders of Pern series for about ten years now, but I've never had the chance to go to a signing with Anne McCaffery. While I was at DragonCon a month and some change ago, I happened to by some twist of accidental fate wind up in the line for her signatures. Sure it took three and a half hours of standing there, but suddenly there I was gazing up at my IDOL. Dressed up as Princess Zelda. Which makes me look even more like I'm twelve (I just don't look twenty XD I get CARDED for MOVIES o.o). Eep. "Did you make your own costume?" "Y-yes." "It's very good! You're adorable." "O_O Th-thank you." "And what was your name?" "M-Mandie." And then as she's signing I managed to gush, "I--I've been reading your books for like, ten years, they're genius." "Oh, thank you." She hands me the book - PERSONALIZED with my name, which is something they'd said they wouldn't do since there were hundreds of people in line hoping for a signature and she wanted to get to as many as possible before she had to go. So I manage a strangled "thank you" and walk off clinging to my book a scant few seconds before I burst into tears. It was the coolest thing ever. So how about you? What's your experience meeting your favourite author?

I have met Laurell K Hamilton twice. She is one of my favorite authors even though I am not terribly excited about the direction her new books have taken. She had book signings in Long Beach and I waited hours to see her and get my book signed. They did personalize my book and she even asked me about T-shirt ideas for my favorite character. She and I share a similar background, we are both from Arkansas and we both have biology degrees. When I met her the second time she actually remembered me from the first time which I thought was extremely cool.

I love LKH! I agree with you - her newest books have been awful (compared to Guilty Pleasures at least which I think was the most ingenious book related to vampires I have EVER read), although The Harlequin sort of redeemed her and I haven't been able to buy Blood Noir yet. She was actually at Dragon*con as well, I tried to get in to get her signature but I was in the 200s and they capped it at 175; that was the only time I could go to her signing so I missed her. Sigh. Ah well, I guess I'll have to wait 'til next year and hope she comes back haha. That's SO COOL that she remembered you! Considering how many thousands of people she probably meets during signings that's really impressive.

Yeah, I know. I must have really made an impression on her. I did a really cool thing for a friend of mine too at the signing. I conned a friend of mine who had never heard of LKH to go with me just so I would have someone to pass the waiting time with--we were in grad school at the time and would rather go to a signing than work. She stood in line too and got some more of my books signed (you could get 3 signed 1 personalized and 2 with just signatures). I also had my friend tell them her name was the name of a friend of mine who is a big fan but lives in Arkansas and has no hope of ever going to a signing. And I gave her the personalized signed book for Christmas. She loved it--one of the best gifts that I ever gave. LKH does quite a few signings--alas most of them are in her home state of Missouri but you can keep up with her appearances on her website and through an email fan letter that gets mailed out ever so often. I haven't read the latest Anita Blakes although I am caught up with the Merry Gentry series. I love Frost's character and the love/angst between him and Merry. I'll have to catch up soon, perhaps after I catch up with Kim Harrison's series.

My favorite author is Stephen King. Unfortunately, I have never met him and I doubt that I ever will. Which is a shame because I would really like to meet him if I could. And of course, if I wouldn't end up embarrassing myself which I somehow always end up doing lol. But yeah, I have never met him.

Awww that's too bad. Stephen King is a pretty young guy, I'm sure he's still doing signings. Have you checked his website to be sure there isn't one within a feasible distance for you? I loved his novel "Insomnia" but the rest of them, which I inherited from my big brother who LOVES King, don't really blow me away.

I haven't met my favourite authors, but I have written them letters (back before there were computers) and I got hand-written letters back from them. I have also emailed a couple who have emailed me back. As far as meeting, I have met several authors, all new to me. Just last night I went to a forum where 3 different authors spoke about how they started into writing, how they got the idea for the book they are currently promoting, and then read from their books. All three authors were hilariously funny. I bought one book and went up to that author and had him sign in. I told him I was enchanted because the family he wrote about in that book has the same surname as my last name. He was surprised. I told him I was actually writing under that name. He was so cute and so friendly. This is the 3rd year I have attended this event so have met several authors over the past few years. I have also met some through a library where they did one-on-one critiquing of my own writing. And attended their seminars as well. Because I am hoping to be a published author myself it has been great meeting published authors and finding out what they did and how many drafts they took to do it. These people take years to write just one book, so I don't feel so bad. LOL! I think meeting authors is more exciting than meeting any other kind of celebrity (except maybe John Travolta ). And the letters and autographs I have are priceless.

I think someone seriously taking the time to sit down and read tons of fanmail and write back (either by hand or by email) is absolutely amazing. It really makes me love the authors when I hear about the people to whom they took the time to reply. I've met a few authors - such as Rudolfo Anaya who wrote Bless Me, Ultima - but none of them have made as large an impact on me as Anne. Honestly I think Laurell K. Hamilton and Karen Marie Moning really brought me back to reading. I'd stopped after finishing the last Anne McCaffery book as I was simply not interested in anything I was finding. After reading Guilty Pleasures and finding all of the other Anita Books and then following with Moning's Highlanders and Fever series... it really brought me back to reading for enjoyment despite the years of reading for class haha. Even better, their blogs and forums have brought me back to WRITING too!

Probably a moment I'm going to remember for the rest of my life. -sigh- That is REALLY cool! My mom met Jesse Owens back when she used to compete in track, she still has the medallion. I would probably kick someone in the face to meet Michael Phelps... that would be exciting. LOL.

That's too bad. Does your author do signings? Might be worth it to keep an eye out! Good luck, for some reason the author's signature makes the book so much more precious lol

I used to see one of my favorite authors every year at the Texas Book Festival. Steven Saylor was always approachable. I saw him once sitting at a booth just talking and he included me in the conversation. Austin is home for him, so I guess he figured everyone was neighbors. Very friendly and always open about his books and what he is doing next. I moved so I can't get to that book festival anymore.
