BBQ Wood

New at BBQing I used charcoal the first time I BBQed and then Mesquite wood the other times. I preferred the flavor of the meat with the Mesquite over the characoal. Readily available in my area is mesquite and pecan wood. I hear Pecan burns a lot hotter, it this true or not? Have you tried different woods while BBQing? Can you really tell a difference in the flavor of the meat by using different woods? If so, which is your favorite wood to use? Also, when using wood, how do you know when the fire is ready to cook on? How long does it normally take to get to that point? Like how long in advance should I start my fire? Thanks, Nocturnica
