Well it depends where in Michigan you want to take them to! I am from the Grand Rapids area, which about 45 minutes east of Lake Michigan. Any of the beaches along Lake Michigan are wonderful, Grand Haven is my personal favorite. Although sicne I've moved to Florida I forget that it gets cool in Michigan around now so I guess the beach is out of the question!
Another great place is Michigan's Adventure. It is a smaller version of a bigger amusement park like Cedar Point or Great America. I believe now it's hooked up with a water park as well. They have quite a few good roller coasters there and I don't believe it costs that much to get in. Maybe around $30-$40? It's been so long since I've been there, but it's a great place for you and your kids to enjoy!
Have fun and enjoy all the Fall colors! It's so beautiful up there at this time of the year!

I live in Western Michigan.
It depends on what time of year you come to Michigan as to what to do. It also depnds what part of the state you go.
In the area the cheapest things to do are go to the park/lake. There are so many small lakes, plus Lake Michigan. That stuff is all free, which is nice. You can visit light houses along Lake Michigan and most are really cheap to get into.
One thing my family does a lot is visit little farm markets. Lots of them have like petting zoos, so you can buy a snack and pet goats, camels, horses etc. My nieces and nephews love going to those.
There are also zoos. My family goes to lots of zoos in the state. I know Grand Rapids, Lansing, Battle Creek and Detroit all have zoos. John Ball Park Zoo in Grand Rapids is open year round (though some of the animals aren't exhibited in the winter). There are also museums and stuff. In Grand Rapids there is a children's museum that is a lot of fun for littler kids (and grown ups! we always have fun taking my nieces and nephews there). There is a public museum that might be nice if the kids are older and there is the Gerald R. Ford museum if any of the family is into that kind of stuff.
If you're going to the north you can check out Mackinaw Island. I've never been there and hear it's expensive, but supposedly a nice place to visit.
If you go in the winter there are places to go skiing and ice skating places. Again I've never done that stuff, but my family does.
It really does depend though what time of year you are in Michigan.
