Hi My puppy Ziggy is three months old and I have been crate training and he is absolutely fine and other than an odd accident when he was really small or really excited no problems. UNTIL, It has been raining and on the last two occasions instead of coming out into his crate and into garden to go he has taken one step outside into the rain and come back in again and gone just inside the door, it is laminate there so not a problem to clean up but I am wondering how to stop this, I have even shut the door and left him out there and he will find a spot under my sons slide that isn't wet but still not go bearing in mind he must be bursting as in crate overnight but the fact he does as near to the garden right by the door shows me he knows where he is supposed to go. He was fine on the beach yesterday with us and it was raining but not in the garden. Suggestions please from you guys as to what to do. I had to let him back in this moring as he was banging on the door and as Sunday didn't want to distrub neighbours too early. Ellie :D

im so the last person to advise on this one, but im responding anyways LOL my dog is a three year old beagle who still refuses to housetrain at ALL rain or shine. so hes been kept outside on a lead during the day.. and put into the shop in the basement at night, to contain his messes in one easier cleanable area. ive done everything possible to get him to train.. but hes a psychotic little thing. mal seems to have MAYBE gotten him to only make a mess in the shop, and still be allowed to roam the house at night.. but last night is the first weve attempted it, so cross yer fingers. we got up without any messes anywhere in the house, and mal took him out first thing this morning.. soo so far so good.
with yers.. it might be that he doesnt like the feel of the mud on his itty paws. ive known some dogs thatd refuse to touch the ground if there was snow. so maybe yers has just got a delicate constitution and dont like to get his paws dirty.

if the barking now becomes a problem.. they have these sound activated collars that work wonders. i had to get one for bask cause the neighbors were calling the cops constantly, and they were threatoning to have him sent to the pound and put down for being a "nuiscance". the collars emit an "irritating" noise and a low lvl electrical pulse when the dog barks. not enough to harm.. just enough to reprimand. within the first days of having the collar on.. basks barking was curbed. now he only barks when hes sposed to.. when he needs something, when someone/thing comes within the vicinity of the yard, etc.. and he doesnt wear the collar anymore. theyre fairly cheapie.. i got mine off of amazon for about 25 bucks. was well worth the price.. kept my mutt from takin a needle.

My dogs have no problems with getting wet, and indeed will be quite happy to drag me out in the rain anytime! So I'm afraid this isn't a problem that I've had to deal with.
I can understand your puppy's point of view though!
I have had a problem with my female dog weeing by the front door in the night though. It wasn't a case that she hadn't had a walk before bed, more a case that she'd done it once & realised that it was easier than going outside. Once she'd developed it into a habit it was very painful for all concerned to break it again. I really hope you get some good advice about how to encourage your new puppy to go outdoors before it gets to be too ingrained a behaviour. Good luck!

ME! Pee under a slide! That is soooo funny. Mind you I had the same vision in Littleowls response as she actually squatted to show them how it was done, reminds me of the time my mate dawn sat on a potty to show my son how too, I wish I had had my camera then. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hi GreenMoo, Well the advice I have had so far is me leading by example so yesterday morning I was out there in the garden getting wet in my dressing gown with him whilst I waited until he had done his business, I shut the back door so he couldn't sneak back in and it did work. Thnakfully it is dry this morning and he went straight ou and peed so it is only the rain he doesn't like, geting there. I had forgotten how much hard work puppies are as its years since I have had one but crate training does seem to work. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hi Ellie I think both my dogs have a strong bladder don't think I could wait all night without one when pickles was a pup though she hated the rain and didn't like going outside to go her brother chips was fine..so in the end I used to take pickles and chips up to the back where there was some gravel and SHOW pickles how to go wee up there!! No not literally but I would just bend down a little and say the noise it makes ..it was funny she woould actually go then!! Huggles littleowl

When my husband and i got married he already have his dog.He said when she was still a puppy,he went to school training for about 10 classes. Then my husband trained her how to pee and poo outside. So everytime she wants out to do that she justscratch our hands or whatever she can reach in our body then we could already understand what she mean.Even it snow or rain she always go out to do that. But i don't have any idea how she was trained. You know, ellie its really nice to train them when they are still young. You would really think they are so smart to do what we want them to do.

Hi Msedge, I have taken him on a training course but it was for basic command behaviour rather than toilet training, he is pretty good now but really was hesitant at first whenever it rained. I still get the odd accident but he is still so very young bless. I am pleased to hear that your hubbys dog was so well trained to ask to go out bless. Thanks for sharing. Seasons greetings to you. Ellie, I have two dogs. They don't go out when is raining. The only way I can make them to go is to take them for a walk.
I am wearing good raincoat and we walk. They rush with the business, because they don't want to walk when is raining.

Hi Polachicago, My puppy is such a wuss, he will happily go out in the day when the sun is shining but is scared of the dark too and I have had to start leading by example and going out in the rain in my dressing gown and also go out there in the dark, bless him. We are getting here though. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hi ellie,
I haven't tried to train a dog, it's always my Dad and we never encounter any problem like this..Our dog hates rain also but he has a place, little house outside our house where he loves to stays every after eating...
I have no idea how dad trained him....Hubby and I is planning to have a dog and that will be my first time to take care since when I was single, I just love to feed and play with them but always dad is the one who trained them!

My poor Petey was the same way. The only two suggestions I have are either put him on a leash and let him out near the porch while you hold an umbrella for him (I actually did this for my Petey numerous times) or on days that it rains put a puppy paper down for him to use...I also did this a few times. Congrats on getting him trained though...it isn't easy sometimes.

Hi Twoey, You are right when you say it isn't easy some days and todays been one of them, it seems that everything he has learnt up til now he has suddenly convienently forgotten but at the same time has discovered his bark but not the meaning of shush or quiet yet LOL. It will be worth it in the end though but I am exhausted today. I think I will go outside with him later and in the morning to see of that helps and put paper down also. Thanks for advice. Huggles. is there anywhere you can set him up a little shelter, maybe like a childrens gazebo, near the door, so he can wee under that.
he obviously just doesn't like weeing in the rain, which is fair enough I suppose, but not convenient. in time he will get used to having to go outside to wee. if he is weeing near the door, as he's weeing, pop him back outside. eventually he should get the message.

It sounds to me like you are letting him out right? If so, you need to stop that and start going out with him. Yes, even in the rain. And stay outside as long as it takes for him to go. He's learning that if it's raining, he can just turn around and go inside. If you allow that to become a habit it'll be way more trouble than you want. The key to housetraining is to not ever let the pup out of your sight unsupervised and to always food-reward outdoor eliminations. If you're not out there with him, you can't reward him. Dogs have a memory of about 3-4 seconds, so it does no good if you reward him when he comes back inside, then he'll likely only connect the reward to coming back inside. Even though he's done good so far with housebreaking, it doesn't mean you should consider him reliable. He's still just a young pup. You just have to be patient and consistent. Took my dog a year before he stopped making a fuss about the rain but he doesn't care much now when he just didn't ever get the chance to go anywhere but outside regardless of weather.

Hi Seraphine, Yes I am so all you say makes absolute sense, this morning I lead by example and got wet myself until he had done his business and then praised him so it worked by being there. I guess beause he had been so good so far I stepped back and to mine and his detriment, will persevere with getting wet myself until he has really got it bless. Thanks so much for your help an advice, appreciated. Ellie :D

Ellie,
My little Bogie hated the rain. Especially wet grass etc. He was so short his little thing would hit that wet grass and you'd think he got shocked!! When it was raining, I used one of those training pads. Put one by the door and let Ziggy use it until it quits raining. I don't think it will ruin his training. It always worked for Bogie.

Hi Leenie, I am going to put paper down tonight ready for the morning as have no pads just in case but think I will go out and get wet with him until he does a wee and then let back in, a little bit of rain never done any harm eh! He has just found his bark today and doesn't know what shush or quiet means yet. Boy this puppy training is complex stuff, just when you think you have got one area sorted another issue arises, but good fun though too. If me going out doesn't work I will use a pad by the door on wet weather days for now. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hi ellie, Ah poor Ziggy! I had a dog that didn't like to
go out in the rain either! He didn't like to get his
feet wet! Snow was ok, but not rain! I think this is
fairly common with dogs and I don't know what to tell
you to do with him. You could try getting him rain geer
and see if that helps.lol He will either get used to it
or he will have to be forced until he understands that
he has to go out into the rain no matter what. We used
to have to really force my dog and he would eventually
go, but we knew he wasn't finished. If Ziggy really has
to go eventually he will. Being that he's still a puppy
he might outgrow this. Just keep trying to drag him out
and try to make him stay out there. If there is a certain
part of him like his feet that he hates getting wet then
I'm serious about the rain geer, boots, raincoat, hat
whatever it takes!

Hi Opal. I can't imagine Ziggy in wellie boots but I will persevere with keep putting him out until he does get to realise he has to go out there. He is stil young but I want to deal with it now rather than it become a habit for him eh! Thanks for your advice Opal. Huggles. Ellie :D

My little dog tried to do the same thing. I just kept saying through the door, "Go Potty." He would look at me with those sad eyes and continue to bang on the door. I just kept repeating it. Eventually, he ran out, went potty and ran back to me. I immediately gave him a treat. I haven't had a problem since.

Awwww. I would suggest using a pee pad for those days when it is raining. If they are going to use the potty indoors when it is raining, at least they may go to the pad and use it. My dog is scared of thunder and lightning. He hides or waits until it is done before he goes to potty.

Hi Steph, I don't want to encourage him to go indoors but I may have to try a pee pad for rainy days I guess. I have been lucky so far in that is usually rains overnight here and is fairly dry during the day but the last wo mornings it has been torrential so I guess I can't blame him eh! I am dreadin fireworks night but hopefully he will be well settled and I will make sure all curtains are shout and the TV quite loud to not make them so scary, the same with your dog with thunder I guess. Even some humans I know are scared of thunder and lightening eh! I like to watch a good storm myself. Thanks for advice. Huggles. Ellie :D
