The movie "I Am Legend" -- Whats with all the UNNECESSARY Bob Marley references?

Wow, one of the most redundant things about this movie is Neville's.... or should I say WILL'S.... obsession with Bob Marley! Let's see, the song is played at least 4 times throughout the whole film and then at the end credits. His daughter in the film is also named 'Marley'. Then there's that whole speech he gives about Bob Marley to Ana's character which had NO point to it whatsoever. Oh and how about that 'Shrek' bit? What the hell was that? an attempt at humor? I saw a little bit of Will Smith coming out of Neville's character there... Come on, Neville liking Shrek? and not to mention, acting LIKE THAT??? That's is all Will Smith. And it was unnecessary. This was obviously all Will Smith's doing, his little contribution to the project. Being that he's an a-list actor and the driving force behind I Am Legend (i.e. it is a "Will Smith" movie), he has some say in what goes and what stays in the film.He played the Bob Marley song too many times, made it the end credits song, had a daughter named 'Marley', the whole shrek scene, and that waste of time speech about Bob Marley's bio/death and world peace which went nowhere (maybe if this was a WAR movie, world peace would make more sense). This was all for what, Mr. Smith? Because you were afraid your star power presence wasn't enough to drive more MTV-ish, BET-ish crowds of people to see this? If that ain't enough, you got a music video director directing this movie, Francis Lawrence. Oh and it shows through the film too with some of that music video choppy ending (i.e. the deer chasing scene at the beginning). I was hoping to see something about why all the Bob Marley references in this film were there in the trivia section on imdb and this is all it says: In the film, Will Smith's character holds up CD, calling it "the best album ever made". The album is Bob Marley's "Legend". It is a greatest hits compilation that was released after Marley's death." That's it? I'm sorry and the point is what again? What does Bob Marley have to do with I Am Legend? NOTHING! So Bob Marley died, an album about him called "Legend" was released after, then we have Will Smith dying in the movie and the movie is called I Am "Legend". WOW!!!!!! That's VERY intelligent, Will. You look so smart now. Don't get me wrong, it's a great movie, Will is great in it. But they needed a better director, REAL people as the creatures, get rid of all the Bob Marley references, the choppy editing, and get rid of the Shrek scene.

Bob Marley and Neville share a lot in common and he feels close to Marley because of his ideas. In the scene where he is talking about Bob Marley to Ana he says that Marley had a virologist idea, he believed you could cure hate and rascism by injecting love into people's lives. Neville is also trying to find a cure, not for the same thing of course but he is trying to save humanity, or what's left of it, and that is how the Bob Marley references connect. Marley also trys to save humanity through his music by dispelling hate from society. They both share a common goal but try to achieve it in different ways. As for the Shrek bit, the dude was alone for years and years so you tend to get lonely and you might memorize a few parts of the movie, it also relates too because the donkey had no one, he was alone just like Neville but that's not until he finds Shrek (Ana).

Haha i actually did laugh out loud when I read the title of this post which is quite rare. First off I am legend was a really good movie however if you buy the DVD you will see an alternate ending which in my opinion is better than the proper movie ending. I have no idea why there are so many references to Bob Marley but I do know where your coming from. Strange but everyone loves a bit of Bob.
