Why are people obsessed with making suicide a crime?

I find it odd that something like suicide should be a crime. I mean you are only prosecuted if you fail since if you don't you are dead and they cannot touch you so really we are only prosecuting people who failed to kill themselves. It just seems seriously bizarre to me. I know all the arguments against it but it seems to me that these people seriously need help not time in prison. I read about women and men who kill their children and then try to kill themselves as well. It must be awful to get so bad that death seems the only way out of the night mare. I have thought about suicide but worked my way out of the problem. I certainly know that going to prison would only make me worse not cure me of some problem. Why are people obsessed with making suicide a crime? I just do not understand how it hurts anyone?
