Why are people obsessed with making suicide a crime?

I find it odd that something like suicide should be a crime. I mean you are only prosecuted if you fail since if you don't you are dead and they cannot touch you so really we are only prosecuting people who failed to kill themselves. It just seems seriously bizarre to me.
I know all the arguments against it but it seems to me that these people seriously need help not time in prison. I read about women and men who kill their children and then try to kill themselves as well. It must be awful to get so bad that death seems the only way out of the night mare.
I have thought about suicide but worked my way out of the problem. I certainly know that going to prison would only make me worse not cure me of some problem.
Why are people obsessed with making suicide a crime? I just do not understand how it hurts anyone?

Well I would hope that they might actually help the person to get better. I believe that a person must be profoundly depressed to try and take their own life and fail. Those that are seriously ill and want to end their pain usually do not fail.

It's one of the many insanities of religious belief, that God (in whichever form they worship him/her) created you, and only he/she has the right to decide when you are going to die, and taking that out of God's hands is a sin, and should be punished not only temporally but also spiritually, so after you get out of prison and finally die you go to hell.
May their God(s) award them everything they so richly deserve.

Yes religions seem to have this attitude that only God can take a person's life no matter how much they might be suffering. I believe they call it a mortal sin which is one of the worst kind. Not only do they go to hell but they are not allowed to be buried on holy ground and that brings shame to the whole family.
