Letting the dentist clean my teeth again, ever!
I think that it was without doubt the most horrible experience I have had this year. I mean you would think that it would be a pleasant experience having teeth cleaned, nice, clean and sparkly. But it is not, it hurts, it was painful and it was that bad I not only felt physically sick but actually started heaving while the dentist was cleaning them because he kept touching my tongue!!
So, next time he tells me I need a clean, I am not having it.
And it cost me £30, ($53.17)
So that is my worst experience of the year so far thankfully, what has been yours?
Do you like having a polish and scrape at the dentist, is it as bad for you as it was for me? Or am I just a wuss?

Hmmmm I would read this when I am about to register with a new dentist! I have been putting it off and putting it off and finally I phoned up a place today, it's even worst when it's the unknown! I had dentists full stop and I need a dentist who is patient, sympathetic and 'human' and they are quite rare! My last visit I remember that I had a bad tooth the dentist asked me if I wanted root canal or extraction well straight away I went for the easy option, extraction and I have heard so many bad stories about root canal, but it took an HOUR to get that tooth out, the roots were well embedded after taking an xray, the dentist mumbled crossly I should have insisted that you had root canal now! I had to sit in the waiting room to let others go in as he was running very late! After tugging, pushing, pulling and more tugging finally it came out! Is it any wonder I haven't been again for over a year! But I do have to go and get a routine check, but I am dreading if anything needs doing!!!

It was my first time in over 3 or 4 years, I have never had any fillings ever, touch wood. So for me this is the worst thing I have ever been subjected too. I cringed reading what you went through though, and I do not think I would ever go back again that is horrible and my teeth are now aching in sympathy of your memory! I do not have to go back for 6 months now, I may just push it out to 7 or 8 months!

if you haven't been in 3 or 4 years that is why you had so much pain!! that is so unhealthy for your mouth to go that long in between cleanings.

I hate going to the dentist too. Everytime I go I have a bad experience. I had a tooth pulled one time, while I was pregnant. It was like a horror movie! He busted my lip in 2 places, I was bruised clear down to my collar bone the next day. He was literally on top of me pulling and pulling. I threw up and almost passed out it hurt so bad!!! Then the S.O.B. tried to charge me extra for "surgically" removing it. I made the biggest scene I could with my mouth in such rough shape. THey probably didn't understand a word I was saying, lol. That nightmare cost me $175.
Good luck!

Oh shoot! You just opened this can or worms. I HATE the Dentist. Sorry to any Dentists out there. Nothing personal. I don't hate you as an individual. I hate your profession. I go to the Dentist every 6 months for my regular checkup and cleaning and I start dreading it about 3 months before my appointment. In fact, my next appointment is on the 16th, in 10 days...ugh! I am not happy. LOL! And, this appointment will involve the awful full mouth x-ray so, I can expect to gag repeatedly over and over for about 15 minutes or more as they try to get my teeth x-rayed. I have the world's worst gag reflex.
Then, I also have sensitive teeth so, as my Dentist cleans my teeth, it will be painful in 2 of them and I am not looking forward to that either. Ugh!
There are dentists that can sedate you a little to do your cleaning. I even think mine can but, I have never asked and, I figured that they would have offered by now. Perhaps I will ask this time. I am dreading my visit with them. I just hate the entire experience. You are not alone. I am right there with you. But, it must be done to ensure that your teeth continue to stay healthy and that there aren't any issues that need to be taken care of.

I know it has to be done, but I still don't like it! I had an exray done two weeks ago, the last time I had an exray done, some years ago it involved putting things in my mouth that made me gag too. This time though I just had to bite my front teeth on a bit of plastic and it was so easy. My next check up now will not be until about april/may of next year.

The last time I did that the nurse, who was the one doing it, scraped the skin off my gums with the tool she was using and it hurt for about a week and a half.
My teeth did look a lot better but the skinning of my gums has so put me off it I haven't been back since.

As a former dental assistant, I would like to tell you that having your teeth cleaned (polishing and tartar removal) is essential to your dental health.
It could be that you have waited a long time to have this procedure done, in which case your tartar had built up to a substantial level. Removing a lot of tartar can be more painful than removing just a little. Tartar inflames the gums causing gum disease. Do you gums generally bleed when you brush? Then you have at least a minor case of gum disease. Gum disease eventually will eat away at the bone structure surrounding your teeth. This is why flossing is recommended and also cleanings every 6 months.
It also could be that your dentist is a particularly aggressive scaler. In the US, dental hygienists generally do Prophylaxis (teeth cleaning) and this is what they do all day long. They are trained to be aggressive and yet gentle. If tartar is not your problem and you are having regular cleanings, then I would suggest a more gentle dentist or one that has a hygienist to do the cleanings.
Remember: more teeth are lost to gum disease than to cavities.

Yeah it had been a while, probably about 3 - 4 years. I have no gum disease, no bleeding etc so I guess there must have been a build up, but that was horrid I felt sick when he did it I just hope that if I do have to have it done again then it will not hurt as much.

Getting my teeth cleaned, or going to the dentist at all has never been a pleasant experience for me. But I go because I don't want to end up with cavities, pain I can't get rid of, or gum disease. I'm envious of the cost you paid. It costs me more than that to get my teeth cleaned. I had my wisdom teeth surgically cut out. That was painful and of course expensive. It took a long time to get my pain prescription given to me. It isn't pleasant, but if one can afford it, it really is important to see the dentist.

I don't mind going to the dentist. the worst thing I have ever experienced, is when they give me a shot to numb me before pulling my teeth or filling a cavity. You may have very sensitive teeth.

So far, I have never had to have a filling or a tooth pulled, hopefully I will never have too, having them cleaned was bad enough.

Well gemini-rose, if you continue to get your teeth cleaned regularly you won't have to worry about getting teeth pulled or having cavities filled, thats the whole idea of teeth cleaning, to keep them clean and your gums healthy, so you don't have any other problems in the future. I know I've had a bad experience once with teeth cleaning, I bled for 5 days afterwards, it was awful, but I know now, my teeth needed to be cleaned bad, and now they are healthy, and even tho, I had to go thru that, I know that if I skip on the cleanings, I'll end up having to go thru that again, and thats not something I want to do. So keep going, you'll be glad that you did, your teeth and gums will be healthy.

I'm a wuss when it comes to getting my teeth cleaned. I did it once last year and even though it hurt a little, it wasn't that bad. I was suppose to go back after 6 months but haven't been back since LOL

don't tell other people not to go back. you aren't a dentist obviously, or you would be urging people to go back twice a year. like i said, you mentioned that you haven't been in 3 years??? that's WHY it was painful, because your mouth has not been properly taken care of. dentists are not the problem, your lack of care for your mouth is!

I can't stand getting my tetth cleaned by the dentist. It hurts me just like it hurts you. I can't have them do it with the water pic because my teeth are too sensitive to the cold, so he has to do it with a pic by hand and no water. It takes a lot longer that way but it hurts less.
I haven't been to the dentist in over 5 years and it is time I go again and get them cleaned. I am a smoker so you can imagine how stained they are. Not gross yet, but close to it.
I just don't like spending the money to go. I don't have any insurance so it costs me the full amount. And it costs about $100 to get them cleaned. I will have to do more posting in mylot to make the money so I can go. hehe

I was told my teeth might go sensitive after they were done, but they have not yet, but I was so glad when it was over and it seemed to go on forever. He must have thought I was a real baby, I was nearly crying! I am a smoker, but do not have stains on them yet!

I've not been to the dentist in probably 2 years. Because it's not that easy for me. I still have a lot of cavities, and they need to be taken care of. But I can't really afford it, not to mention the fact that I'm so not interested in hearing the lectures again. Everytime I see a dentist all they do is say I gotta do this, gotta do that, gotta stop doing this. Ugh! Just fix my teeth and shut up already! LOL

wow you all take dentistry for granted. people in other countries have rotting teeth that fall out, keeping them from eating anything solid, and everyone is complaining about the cost of going to the dentist. be glad you can have your teeth cleaned and KEEP THEM IN YOUR MOUTH. some people would die to be as lucky as those of us able to go to dentists.

I know, it is really expensive, my hubby reckons he needs some more fillings. I told him he would have to wait til next year and our insurance starts again, we can only make one claim on it a year and I will have to claim it for mine now.

I am with you. I ABSOLUTELY HATE GOING TO THE DENTIST!!!!! I can't think of anything worse. I normally get almost physically sick thinking about going. I am shaking like a leaf on a tree then entire time that I am in the chair.
My worst experience this year, was also at the dentist. I am 42 years old. I was told at the age of 18 that my wisdom teeth were impacted and urged to get them out, which back then would have required hospitalization overnight to have the 4 of them pulled out. Well at the time they did not bother me and the dentist basically was reading what he saw on an XRay. Well I told the dentist when they bother me, then I will be back. They never bothered me up until this past January. It wasn't a prolonged thing. All of a sudden I had a pain that felt like someone had hit me over the head with an ax. The pain was so bad that when it struck I almost lost control of my car. I suffer from migraine headaches and the pain was pretty close. Anyway I ended up having to have my wisdom tooth removed in emergency surgery. Basically this removal would have required being put to sleep. But since this was an emergency I could only have a local anestetic. Literally the doctor had to stradle me to get the tooth out. I could hear and see everything, as well they could not eliminate all of the pain. It was horrific. Hours after the meds wore off, I was still in pain for days. I was on a liquid diet, then a soft diet. It was awful. I am cringing just writing about it!

I too was recently at the dentist. I would love to have just a cleaning. I haven't been to a dentist in 4 years and my teeth were horrible prior to that. I never took care of them when I was younger. They had to do a sonic gram on me. Thats where they take the pick scrapy thingy and clean under your gums. It sprays cold water and they dig at your teeth under your gums. I don't think I have ever tasted so much blood. The worst part is that they couldn't even finish because it hurt so bad so I have to go back for them to do a portion of my mouth each time. I will be in there atleast once a month for a while.

that is NOT A GOOD IDEA. it is necessary to have proper cleaning of your teeth; just brushing and flossing does not do the trick. otherwise you will end up with rotting teeth, gingivitis, and a horribly yellow smile. no matter how much you don't like it, it's like having a surgery. if you don't get it over and done with, you are going to end up in a lot of trouble. if you really want to feel actual PAIN associated with cavities, then don't go to the dentist. but you will regret it afterwards.

I hate having my teeth clean it can be really painful. LOL!!! But I think the worse experience so far this year is when the kids got the flu one after the other. LOL! I guess for me I'd rather have pain then puking.

It is horrible when they all get ill one after the other, mine had chicken pox really bad one after the other and a sickness bug one after the other. Not nice. I would rather have the puking than pain, I can handle puke. It is all in the breathing technique!!

Well, you have your own reason on why you do not want to go back again with your dentist but you always have your choice and you can transfer to another Dentist if you would like too because so far for my experience I am having a good time with my Dentist she is the best of taking care of my teeth.....
