Have you ever been in an attic? What was it like?

Once, I lived in a house, where the attic was
a real room. That ended up being my brother's bedroom.
It was really hot during the summer.
But, I guess he liked his privacy.
Our current house has an attic. Or, at least, I think it does.
Never been up there.
So, maybe it's just a crawl space.
The only way up into the "attic" is through a little
door at the top of our bedroom closet.
Not sure anyone could fit up through that door.
Have you ever been in an attic? Have you ever lived
in an attic?

I have never been up in one, because I am unable to climb the ladders that lead up there. We have a loft at the log cabin that Mom and Dad built, and I can't climb up there either. If they'd have made a staircase instead of a ladder I would have been able to get up there just fine.

Ours had a built in ladder.
I was always so afraid of falling.

My attic has no stairs etc.
It is above all the shelves in a closet with tons of stiuff on the shelves.
I placed things on the shelfs when we first moved in here.
Then a few months later I realized the attic entrance was there as well.
Never had a reason to go up there yet.

Same here!
But, I'm afraid I'll get bit
by a spider or pass out from
heat exhaustion up there.

When I was a small boy we had a place with an attic. My brother and I slept up there and it was very warm which was nice in the winter. In the winter it got so cold that the entire lake beside the lodge we lived in froze solid. I am not a winter person and never have been, I loved that attic and its warmth
I can fit into a crawl space door, but I have never been in the one inside my current house. Too many spiders up there I'm sure. I don't do bugs

Yes, I have an attic. It is not a finished room. It is all over the top of the house, and I store lots of junk up there. When we bought this house we had the little door in the top of the attic. My husband put in a pull down ladder, and framed it up with molding that matched the window frames, and fixed it so that you can not open it without opening the closet.

I have been in many attics in my day. They scared me when I was little. I lived in Upstate New York as a child and my parents used to let one of my older sisters use the attic for a bedroom. They competed for it on a revolving basis. It was not actually converted so there were a few months out of the year that it was too cold to use it.

Our attic was converted and it was very cold
during winter, too.
We didn't stay there too long, though.

I have been in many attics in my life. Most of them were unfinished and mostly unused. Dark and damp and full of cobwebs. Ours when I was growing up had a steep staircase going up from the floor. It was not very much fun to climb up there. We had a hatch that we would open up in the summer time to get more air flow in the house, so I had to go up and shut it if it was going to rain.

One of our friends had a house with
a big exhaust fan and they had great circulation
in the house.

I've been in many attics and it is just an unfinished room to me.
No fears etc from me going into an attic.
As a child my dad redid our attic as a 3 bed room for us boys.
Odd thing though is I have had this house for 6 years now.
I have yet to go up into my attic.
Shelfs in the way with things stored on them is the reason why.
Some day I may move the stuff and remove the shelfs and venture up there.

Must have been pretty cool to have your three rooms
up there.
We only had one big open room with no insulation.
But, it was finished, in the sense that it had
safe floor boards.
At least, I think they were safe!

ive never lived in a house that even had anything large enough for a person to crawl through! always loved the way those attic bedrooms look in the movies lol! i didnt realize the temperature swung to such extremes during summer and winter though. makes sense i guess, the house arent built with attics and the intention that the attic is used as a living space right? so the insulation or whatever is on open on the flooring?
boy i would have LOVED having a neat attic room when i was a teenager!

Same here. But, my mom wouldn't let me sleep up there
cause of the heat.
My brother loved it, though.
He used a fan. That was fine for him.
He had all that room to himself.
Pretty much a house sized room!
Lucky guy.

Hello beauty queen. My own apartment is on the seventh floor, the top floor of the building. We bought it because we love the pavilion instead of attic on the top. I mean the top above our apartment. There is a big pavilion there for us to use. My wife and I have already planned to make the pavilion by adding two walls to make it a big room for relaxation next summer. We are going to have the two walls mostly made of glasses with a few bricks below the glass windows and a glass door. By then it will be a wonderful big room for us and our guest to play in. My relatives love to play majiaong and cards. So they will be able to enjoy themselves there. I am looking forward to its being built.

Something more to add here. We have another flight of stairs to go to our pavilion. So it is very convenient. In fact, there is not only a big pavilion on top but also some other space on top, the same size of our apartment exactly when the square meters are added up to together---one hundred square meters. That is the very reason I love my apartment though it is on the top floor of the building.

A house we lived in for 4 years also had a little door above the bedroom closet. The house was owned by my husband's rich cousin, and we often laughed that there was probably a lot of money hidden up there. But neither of us ever had the guts to look. I was too afraid I'd greet a nasty little pair of eyes if I opened that door.

We have an attic in our house. We could have had a room with dormer windows, but chose not to. We use it as a storage are over our bedrooms and that end of the house in the attic is floored. It is hot but not as bad as it could be if there were no outlets for the air. We once had the electric fans or whatever they are called on the roof, but they wore out and now the ones there are not electric. They only turn with the wind. We have a ladder that comes down in our hall way and it's easy to climb.

We made a bedroom for our son in our attic the few years ago.
I thought it was a terrible idea but I must say it worked out well. He has since moved out so it is a storage area again.
My youngest still at home wants nothing to do with it.

We have an attic and a crawl space. I try to stay out of both of them. I don't like creepy places, lol.

Oh yeah i've been up in my attic over the years. Nobody has a room up there but we store stuff up there. We store our Christmas tree and the ornaments up there. We got all kinds of boxes stored up there and i'm not sure of everything thats up there since me and my family has stored stuff up there over so many years. Yes it gets really hot up there during the summer. When I get the Christmas decorations out of the attic theres a ladder that extends to the floor to climb up there. Our cat always runs up the ladder and stays up there for a while way back there to where we can't get to(unless we want to take a chance on falling through the ceilling)and we have to wait for her to come back down.

When I was a teen, my bedroom was the attic. It was about half as big as the rest of our house - with three rooms. I had only the largest room as my bedroom and the other two smaller rooms were used as storage. It was hot, but my room was the only one with a room air conditioner. The rest of the house had no a/c at all, so my room was often the coolest place in the house. :-)
