Ugh fleas are so gross!

After trying to combat fleas the eco friendly way and failing, I broke down and got the advantage from our vet. It is working - and quickly. I guess I didn't realize how bad the fleas were. Both cats are sitting on my desk and fleas are hopping off of them to die. Yuck!

Well, it was either the advantage or a flea ridden home. Our cats don't seem to mind it at all until the fleas start biting.

Fleas are nasty and a pain to get rid of! They have a pretty long life span, and their eggs can last a long long time, waiting for the right conditions to hatch. I've used some of the 'spot' products, and my cat had bad reactions to them. For a bad infestation, if your cat will tolerate a bath, use a good conditioning cat shampoo and add a few drops of DAWN dishwashing soap. Kills fleas on contact. Also. if you have an outdoor faucet, save one of those bottles that mix water with fertilizer to spray - and refill the bottle with DAWN. Treat the perimiter of your house, and the yard areas where your cat plays. LOL..if a neighbor sees you, just tell them that you're washing your lawn... Most flea sprays you buy at the store aren't worth it...Hartz is the worst, in my opinion. One brand that works is available at your vet, called VetChem. Another is Zodiac, which is actually made by the same company and is identical to the veterinary product, at half the price. Even with Advantage, you should still treat the indoor environment, especially your cat's bedding and the perimeter of all your rooms. Otherwise, since your cat has been treated, you become the food of choice.

We had ride the zodiac stuff in the past and it didn't work either. We have tried just about everything OTC and none of it worked. Of course, frontline doesn't work for us either. We do treat the house, we actually do that before medicating the cats. To me that is a last resort. Our cats are use to baths. Any soap will kill the fleas on contact, not just dawn. Folks use dawn because it is animal friendly. The real key to the bath is combing them with a flea comb while bathing them. The big problem now is our carpet. Usually I salt the carpet down and then vacuum. We run the roomba 2-3 times a week. A few months ago it broke and we just got it back. Problem is, I have no clue where the battery went and I don't have the money to buy a new battery or buy a new vacuum cleaner. I have one of those dirt devil hand vacuums that I have been using, but you know it isn't as good as a real vacuum cleaner.

I only do a room at a time. So the low traffic areas get done whenever, but the high traffic areas only get done when I am home alone. I do with it in with a broom though., We don't have a very deep pile carpet.

How deep are your carpets? When you salt them, can you work it down into the nap with a broom? That way you get the benefit, without having it tracked all over the house?

I cannot stand flras or gnats either. I have a dog and we use frontline on him and we also use a flea collar for him sometimes. The gnats are really bad this year though. They are after just about everything.

The Vet Tech was saying everyone is having problems with fleas right now. We had a small cool spell then it is hot again. What bugs me is that our cats only go on our balcony, which means that we have someone elses fleas! Frontline doesn't work at all for us. We used it for a few months and then it stopped. I have tried a few of the non-chemical flea meds, they don't work either.

Well since you already are using advantage, I wondered if you have tried lavender oil before? My daughters friend has cats and a dog and what they do is get lavender oil that you find in most hobby shops. Then they take a spray bottle and fill it with water and then add the oil until the water smells like lavender. Then spray this solution in the same area you put the advantage, the neck and above the tail..Then starting from the back of your house, spray this going towards the front of the house to the front door. I am trying it, except Hobby Lobby was out of the oil and so I bought the fragrance which I think works a little, but not enough..If you haven't tried this before, try it next time, just make sure it is oil and not the fragrance.

Is that the essential oil? I am sort of leery of using any more essential oils based stuff. We tried the Sentry Natural defense that you can get just about anywhere. It has: Peppermint Oil........................3.00% Cinnamon Oil..........................4.50% Lemon Grass Oil.....................4.50% Clove Oil................................5.00% Thyme Oil...............................5.00% and our male cat had a mild allergic reaction to it. The stuff also smelled horrible (like someone dumped a box of cloves on our cats).

I love the scent of cloves, that wouldn't have bothered me if it also got rid of the fleas..As for if this is an essential oil, I don't know. I found it in the candle making aisle. You could try a small test to see if your cat is sensitive to this..

If your cat (or dog) eats a wet food, try adding a little garlic to their food. I've done this with all my pets. We live in an area that has a very high outdoor flea population, and for 4 years it's been a constant battle. This year, while occasionally they do get a few, it's been a whole lot less. I think the garlic in their system makes them taste bad to the fleas.

You do have to be careful with garlic, it is toxic to cats and dogs in the wrong dosages.

When I got my kitten from the pet shop, I didn't realize she had flea infestation until I saw welts on my son's arms. Finally regular shampooing did the trick. Its a good my cat loves baths.
