Why do people think feminists can’t be feminine?

So many people seem to think that feminists are all male bashing, lesbians who just want to either be men or take over from men. But feminism is about women having the right to choose how to live their lives. You can be a feminist and still be a feminine woman who likes to wear skirts and be a stay at home career mother. That is your choice for your life. Just because work is not paid does not devalue it. So what do you think? Why do some many people think that a feminist is automatically a lesbian?

Because feminism frightens a lot of people, and challenges their programmed prejudices, whether they are male or female. The masculine lesbian gibe is simply using caricature instead of thought, the lazy person's answer to challenge. It's like men calling 'sensitive' men poofters. Lash

Yes I think feminism does frighten a lot of people. I know some men find it very threatening as they think they are superior and they do not like women challenging their superior place in the world. I am always surprised by women who feel threatened by it as it is them that the feminists are striving to liberate. Yes well I have known some men who would call sensitive men poofters and I did not like them. I have also discovered that men can be sensitive without losing their masculinity or their strength and I like that.

I've always thought it was a result of the 70s. Not that every woman was the stereotypical way, but a huge movement of bra burning and haircutting made it seem as though women were attempting to be more masculine, not necessarily more independent. As a result the women against the movement became more feminine and "old school" resulting in this huge division of perspectives. So it's a stereotype that has unfortunetly stuck that feminists are lesbian bra burning angry broads in tool belts. I suppose these women were more secure in their views and more vocal, which drew the attention away from the ones who walked the middle of the road, not the extreme.

It probably was but it is sad that we have not made any progress in the last 30 years. It is also a misconception on people's part that lesbians all try to look like men as there are plenty of attractive feminine lesbians in the world. Although I think it is men who assume that only ugly women are lesbians. Strange too since some of the cutest guys turn out to be gay but women are used to that. There is also a misconception that any girl who is interested in being a tradie must be a lesbian but it is so wrong. I see the same misunderstanding about male hairdressers, although a lot of them just act gay as they seem to think it is some sort of artistic act.

I think feminists get a bad reputation because the most vocal members are often the way you've described. In college, any seminar on any topic (no exaggeration, even primatology) had at least one woman who could pinpoint exactly how the topic at hand is really just another form of men suppressing women. Any comment made by a male student could be subject to analyzation, and a lecture from a female about how that response is "so typically male". I'm a woman, and I love women!! We ARE different from men, believe it or not... There are physical differences, mental differences, etc. We are no worse or better than men. So the feminists who insist women are the same as men also get me, why deny what makes you unique in order to score points? For that matter, whose keeping score?? I consider myself a humanist, I want all people to be treated well. At the same time, recognize the differences! And absolutely NO coddling. I will never assume a woman was treated poorly as a result of discrimination, I will accept it if the facts lead that way, but I would never assume it!

I quite agree that men and women are different and so they should be we are two halves of the human race. Men will always be stronger than women but that does not make women inferior as some men argue. It is simply a physical fact. We think differently as well which is fine as we can bring a different perspective to any issue. I am a feminist and I am also a woman who likes to be feminine and prefers to wear skirts. Feminism is not about trying to be male it is about equality of choice, about not being excluded because you are female, being allowed to compete on merit. When they say they are the same as men they do not mean identical in every way but equal as human beings. Sexism still exists and if we are not careful it could easily come back to suppress us. There are still many people who believe that women should be locked up in their houses as the property of their husbands or fathers. That is an extreme example but there are some religious people that believe this and scary to me because we are weaker and in a physical fight we lose most of the time.
