How important is experience for career advancement?

A worker looks forward for satisfaction in a new job involving new skill learning and new responsibilities. But the biggest question is: Without prior experience in the field (of the new job), how would the candidate prove their capability to the potential employer? What would you do if you were the employer? Do you think a candidate should be considered only if he/she has prior experience in the same field, or would you give a chance to a promising candidate who doesn't have any prior experience of the field????

Hi there ibiswas! Most companies prefer applicants who have previous work experiences particularly those that are related to the job available. This is because they can save a great deal amount of time, money and effort in terms of training activities. But this should not be a reason to discriminate against those who do not have previous work experiences. Besides, if the person is really qualified for the job then hire him by all means. If the only issue is that the person doesn't have relevant job experience, they can always be sent for or be provided with training. Some companies invest a great deal of money for this purpose. But that's okay since the skills their people can get from the training activities can be applied in the company.

Hi dolce... Thanks a lot for your neatly framed explanation. I too agree with what you stated.. There are many organisations who spend lot of money for training since they are well planned to consume the talent in future projects and assignments. If every company thinks the same of not recruiting freshers then these guys will never get an oppurtunity to prove their talent and skills...

I think you have raised an important issue here, I too faced a similar problem when I was looking for a job straight out of college. As a fresher with no experience no one wants to hire you because you do not have any experience, but then if no one hires you then how will you get experience. The key work here is "promising candidate", well actually thats two words, but what I want to say is that a good employer knows how to spot potential in a candidate even if they have no prior experience, likewise a candidate should show their willingness to learn and ability to work hard. Hope this helps others out there who might be looking for their first job. Best of luck.

Thanks buddy!!!! Yes i think the talent should be in the eyes of the employer to spot out a potential talented candidate and it must again be the full efforts of the candidate to learn and prove himself... Thanks for your nice explanation...
