do you find it hard to eat healthy? i find that this is especially true if you are on a fixed income. carbs are cheaper and fruits and veggies are more expensive.
any thoughts? If you are struggling financially, what do you eat?

Hi,
I do find it harder and harder to eat healthier because of the price of food. I do the best that i can, instead of fresh veggies I will buy frozen, try and throw in some fresh fruit when i can. It all about substitutions and trying to stay as healthy as possible. I recieve food stamps once a month, and even thought that sounds great I have some serious eaters in the family. try cassarole dishes something you can eat more than once. Stir frys with fresh or frozen veggies. I live down south where they are the masters at feeding large families on less. If you have a crock pot cook a pot of beans of your choice and brown or wht rice. Use coupons when you can. Every little bit helps, if I can help in any other way just drop a line.

Hi cher,
we tried to always have veggies and fruits even if we are budgeting, it is very necessary and we are just trying to cut our eating out this time instead of doing it like twice a week, we are trying to do it once a week to save!
and good thing we still have some veggies from our garden and it helps a lot!

Cher913, I agree with you, fresh produce is so expensive these days. We've recently discovered Saturday farmers' markets in our area and the produce is less than half the cost that our local grocery stores charge, plus it's way fresher and better produce. We are thrilled about this discovery.
So, we actually are saving quite a bit of money and just try to buy meats, bread, eggs, and the occasionally packed snacks (ice cream treats, nuts, and chips) at the store, while purchasing the produce at the farmers' markets.

Hi cher, I agree with you in this point. Luckly here vegetables keeps cheap and the fruits of season (not much cheap LOL). So isn't hard to eat healthy. But the meat is very expensive now the same way for chicken. I have changed it for eggs and some cheap fish. We eat liver too ( rich with vitamin A and iron). We must do our best with this prices.
Have a nice day.

Everythings gone up. And food which is most important are more expensive than gadgets.
My family has a small front garden of vegetables and a couple bananas. Then I go to a small market where farmers sell their produce at a much lower price twice a week and it's just walking distance from home.

I actually don't find it hard to eat healthy. I usually buy various fruits and fresh and frozen veggies weekly and I can get one weeks of good fruits and veggies for $25 or less depending where I shop and $25 of fruits and veggies feeds 3-4 people a week in my household. There is a Asian supermarket not too far from where I live and I find that the a lot of the fresh fruits and veggies are less expensive in the Asian market then in the regular grocery store. We are on a monthly fixed income also but we always manage to find great deals on food and other items we need. Sometimes we are lucky and get stuff for free also. I also find if you buy certain food in larger quantities that it's usually cheaper in the long run. I've heard of a place called Angel food ministries and you can spend a little bit of money ( and they even take the access/food stamp card)and you can get a HUGE box of fresh meat, veggies and all types of good stuff and this food is enough to last you a month, I believe a one month supply of food is like $25 ( I believe, but don't quote me on that).

hi there i agree that healthy food in the supermarkets always does cost you more. Carbs are definatly cheaper than fruit and veg.
But i have found going to the local fruit and veg stall on the market is a heck of a lot cheaper than going to the supermarket and the produce is just as good even better some times.
There are always local farmers markets here once a month too where you can buy home made sausages and meats, cheeses and allsorts realy
I find they are a gem and very affordable too
I think shopping around helps a lot in this day and age
