Hey everyone
Just wanted to let you all know that I took R to the hearing clinic yesterday for a hearing test.
Well, it seems that he definitely doesn't have full hearing in either of his ears. The right is apparently worse than the left. However, thankfully, the lady who did the test doesn't seem to think it is a irreparable problem.
It seems that there is fluid behind the eardrum and if we can clear that then he shoudl be OK. It isn't Glue Ear - at least not yet - or so she said, but may develp into Glue Ear if we leave it. At this stage she seems to thing that by blowing through is nose he may be able to clear the mucus out and will sort himself out without having to have grommets inserted. We have to wait till January to get him checked again and then we will find out what the next step is if it is necessary to get his ears drained.
So, have any of you ever gone through something like this with your kids? What was the outcome? Are your kids OK? Did they have problems with their speech?
Thanks

Thanks Jill - I hope so too. I am taking him back to the original doc tomorrow to see what she says. They have told me to get him to blow through his nose to try to clear the ears, but hey! he is only 3, there is very little chance of getting him to do this well enough to clear it up and it just means delaying the solution for 3 months!
Oh well! What can you do, just gotta go with the National Health system I guess.

My dad has his ears drained, but of course he was an adult. Funny though, before he discovered he had to have them drained, he had started speaking differently. It was kind of hard to understand him. We thought maybe it was allergies. I'm really glad to hear this is fixable. I'm sure you and your son are both very relieved!

Wow, that is amazing. R's speech is really bad. All slurry most of the time and we are hoping that once they drain the ears then it will come right - poor kid. Apparently he is hearing things muffled so he when he is learning his sounds etc, he is learning muffled. I can understand how that can happen with someone young who is still learning to speak properly, but amazing that it would also affect an older person in the same way.
Thanks for your response.

Oh I am sorry to hear about your kid. I do hope he'll be okay real soon. My kids are ok and they don't get sick that often. They used to get sick much when they were young but not that much anymore at the present. Hope they never will.

My youngest son and I were just talking about a similar issue today! He is 14 now but when he was born we thought he had hearing difficulties. While in the nursery after being born when he was scheduled for his picture to be taken, he was sleeping, they talked to him to try to wake him and it did not work, then the nurse hit the side of the crib with her hand near his head and he still did not wake up. They finally picked him up to get wake him up then took his picture. After that appointments were scheduled for him with the peds department. Over the first 2 years he had constant problems with his ears and ear infections. It eventually ended up with him having to get tubes put into his ears. His hearing is alright now, he does pass the hearing tests, it was something he had to grow out of. I hope that your child's problem is something that they will grow out of as well! Good luck!

Gee, I would have been a bit worried if this had happened to him when he was a tiny baby - not that I am not worried now of course.
I am hoping that we will be able to sort this out for him before he starts school next Sept so he doesn't suffer with his reading and writing.
Thanks for your response.
