anti-virus/ anti-spyware

Does anyone get anti-virus/anti-spyware programs? I don't. I swear I have tried like thirty different kinds on my computer and none catch everything they are supposed to or they mess up programs I use like my IM and internet explorer. I was so fustrated last night I about threw the computer right out a window! Literally. The only thing stopping me was that I didn't want to have to clean up broken glass. Am I doing something wrong or just not getting the right programs?
