My 8 year old just asked me..."mom, wo was the first person alive...."
Now I am not a religious person, I would not call me a athist but i don't really have any set faith, which I must say is probably a hugh sin but what can you do...I told her it is a long and complicated story but it is in the bible and it deals with GOD and religion....but there is another story that said we elvolved from apes...it just depends on what you believe in...she said oh and went on her merry way...what would you have said...

That simply depends on "our" beliefs now doesn't it? If a person thinks the Bible is just a bunch of stories written by old men. And don't take any of it as fact. Then DAM is a fictional character.

Let me begin b saying it is never wrong to tell our children, "I'm not exactly sure," or "I really don't know." It is more destructive if we feed them lines and make it sound like fact, only for them to find out for themselves later in life that we were full of crap.
I'm going to avoid the specific question because others have done a well enough job and I added my imput there. But for future questions, the responses I just gave ou are a good start. The next step would be to say, lets find out together." Then go dig in, research every possible angle together with your child. Rent videos and books from the library, hop online and do some keyword searches, ask others for resources...and have fun finding the answer together.

You are very welcome :) Its good to hear of parents out there taking the time to help their children develop a love of knowledge. School gets to be soo boring, and just another thing that has to be done. When parents take the time to show their kids that it can be fun and interesting, education takes on a whole knew attitude!!!

I would say "I don't know son, because I wasn't there when he/she first lived."
It's a logical explanation because that guy/girl would have been a billion years old and finding his/her root would prove to be difficult because of the lack of information a billion years ago.
But there are myths about that person, and any kid couldn't really relate to the stories of science and it would only make them more confused if you tell them about the scientific explanations. So better, just say it the way I did, or perhaps tell them a story or so about the myths that we have around about the first humans.
It need not be complicated if you talk to a kid. Just remember to be honest and simple.

i think you told her the right thing about both theories and when she is older she can make up her on mind about it. some will say only from the bible but what about dinosaurs etc no-one who is religious will say where they came from and how they got on the earth.

Depends on what you count as religious. I go to church, read the Bible, and pray to God...does that alne make me religious? I break the rules, go against the church beliefs to find my own truth, doe that make non-religious? I am a person of faith, and here to say that three dinosaurs are mentioned in the Bible. You will have to give me until at least till tomorrow to give you the exact location, since my kids' world history book is upstairs, and its late:)
That a side, yes the poster answered very well:)
