Why did it take so long for people to know about Fedor?

So I am still puzzled as to why Fedor Emelianenko still gets minor recognition by the masses outside the MMA comunity. He has beaten almost ALL of the sports biggest names such as Tim Silvia, Hong Man Choi, Mark Coleman, Antonio Rodrigo Nogiuera, Semmy Schilt and Gary Goodridge. Even with a 29-1 record and a seemingly indestructible total package why have so many until know not recognized him?

One reason why he may not be so well known besides the fact that he has not fought in the only really mainstream organization (The UFC) is that many of his wins and fights in general have not been in the absolute mainstream emergence of the sport in general. He's only really fought maybe twice a year in the past few years. Also, as a comment to the fact that he has beaten all these famous names, while many of these names may be well known to MMA fans, most of them (if not all of them) are still not that well known outside of the mixed martial arts community. This sort of brings up another note which compliments this examination of Fedor's relative unknown status. While MMA is certainly known in the public eye to exist, I'm not sure how well people know anything about the sport besides potential prejudgments such as the barbarism, etc. I could probably ask my friends (who don't really know anything about MMA to my knowledge) as to whether or not they know who Randy Couture or someone of equivalent fame in the MMa world and my guess is that they would have no idea who he is. MMA has just not spent enough time in this world to truly be known, we'll just have to wait to see how much impact MMA has on the history books.

Doomed is right. Most people who call themselves "MMA Fans" know only the mainstream UFC fighters and don't know about the great foreign fighters. Pride FC wasn't nearly as popular as the UFC, at least in the states. It took Fedor to become the WAMMA Champion to really get his name out there and to show people who the best is!

That is well said ArtVandeley. For some people MMA is equivalent to UFC which is not suppose to be the case. The MMA world is way bigger than what the UFC is. The only problem is all sponsors go to UFC due to it's publicity and and they are the ones who started it.
