How do you plan your holiday budget?

I plead guilty to being an impulsive buyer. Reason why for this year, I am psyching myself to hold on to my cash and think as many times as I can before I splurge. I also have started my Christmas list at this early to prevent myself from buying too many trinkets just for random giveaways. I named every specific person on my list and parallel to them are my ideas of what to give them. I am also on the look-out for great big sale days from the malls to grab goodies you may no longer see when the holidays come. How about you? Can you share some tried and tested steps in saving and planning your holiday budget?

i used to be a impusle purchaser and i still am when i visit thrift stores, but i seldom visit the mall anymore either, so that is good, plus we dont have a lot of extra cash right now. i have done about 50% of my christmas shopping (i am making some and have bought quite a bit already at sales and the like).

I'm very particular about what I give people for Christmas. So I don't mind spending a lot on family and friends because they're worth it. However, I have a budget for individual gifts. If I overspend on someone then I just save on someone else. But I don't have a big allotted money just for Christmas. it's more of a per gift budget rather than a Christmas fund budget.
