Is it the brand, or is it my phone?

Some one told me that Samsung phones are not the greatest. My cell phone is a Samsung and I have problems with keeping the battery charged. I have had it almost 2 years so I would imagine that problems may come up but this problem started less than a year after I had it. At first it wasn't so bad but it gets worse and now I hate it. We were told that with our phones, we should not let the battery go completely dead before we charged tham. I always charged mine when it was down to one bar left. I never overcharged it either. Now it doesn't hold a charge overnight even when it's not in use at all. My phone will just turn itself off and say it needs charged after not even being used. Does anyone know if it really is the brand, or do I just have a bad phone? I will probably be getting a new phone next month so does anyone think I should stay away from Samsung?
