My Daughter Broke My Glasses!

I'm wearing an old pair of sunglasses. My daughter just broke a pair of glasses I was wearing. She grabbed it from my face and in a instant broke the plastic frame. It is irreparable. I was upset. I had to look for any pair of spectacles I had previously worn, but the only pair I have is an old pair of sunglasses which I had it made with degree on the lenses.
Since it was made a few years ago, it's not suitable for my eyes and I had to adapt for awhile. Later on, I have to the shop to get a new pair. I don't think I can get it by today. It usually takes a few days to get it done. And I'm going out to visit some relatives tomorrow! Wouldn't I look weird entering a house with sunglasses? Has this happened to you before? Were there other things your kids broke and that item is something you really depend on? What did you do then?

I try not to react too violently. I know kids are watching us all the time. Sometimes, I have to let off some steam too. I think I have to make glasses in wrought iron instead of plastic.

my kids have not broken anything that we needed, but when my oldest was a baby, he reached out and grabbed onto my necklace and yanked, and of course it broke. :( i was so sad- it was only a $5 necklace, but my hubby had bought it for me on our honeymoon in st. thomas. it is made out of shells or something, like black glass. we bought it from a lady selling handmade stuff on the beach. luckily my hubby was able to restring it using a piece of fishing wire. :)

YOu are lucky indeed that you kids don't normally break things, except for you rnecklace I suppose. I think your hubby did great with the fishing wire. I was thinking of making my glasses in wrought iron.

You are lucky that your kids do not break anything much except your necklace of course. It has sentimental value for you and I can understand if you feel sad. But your hubby di dgreat by stringing it with fishing wire. I am thinking of hanving my glasses made of wrought iron.

If you explain to your relatives what happened and why you are wearing sunglasses, I think they will understand. Anyone who has kids know these things happen. Are there any eyeglass stores that can make a pair for you in about an hour? We use to be able to do that but don't know if those stores are still in business. You might try calling your eye doctor's office and see what they suggest.
I'd be walking into walls if I had to wear an old pair of glasses. I wear either contact lenses or glasses all the time. My prescription yo-yo's all over the place and probably because of my age.

I went to the optical shop to see what they could do with my glasses. They suggestd I change the frames only since I needed it urgently. The guy took a few minutes to find a pair of glasses that had lenses of the same size and shape. Luckily there was one. But it cost me a bomb. I probably have to myLot for the next 6 months to recoup that expenditure. I meant to buy a new pair at the end of the year anyway. So what the heck? He also said that if I wanted to change the lenses, I could so with them and they will charge for the lenses only.

$125 is a lot of money. Sometimes these teenagers are at that age where they don't give a hoot about anything. Maybe one day he will realise that he caused you a lot of grief.

lol that's actually pretty funny, did your daughter grabbed your glasses off of your face and just broke it intentionally? seems like she just did that because she had nothing else better to do... lol (no offense) my family members aren't that stupid or jerks to intentionally or accidentally break my glasses, it's not like they got nothing else better to do. I remember (i don't have kids) that our dogs used to break things or just vandalize the entire house and we (not me) SPANKED THEIR BUTTS so badly... and they didn't learn their lessons. they would like climb on our desks and just bite this and that papers, or pee on the carpet floor (which was a pain to take it off) or just knock down the trash cans, or tear up the toilet papers, and... yeah you get the idea. I still love those dogs, and I miss them so much (even though they caused too much trouble) back in the time when I just couldn't stand watching the vandalized rooms after i come home from school or work, I just wanted to beat the crap outta them. But after i take care of the vandalized rooms, I would then forget about all the trouble they caused, and just became happy whenever I looked at them.. lol they were gorgeous!! happy posting :)

HI animeniak,
Sometimes I wonder if she really did that on purpose. But she knew that she did something wrong when I showed her my unhappy face. But knowing kids, they don't really understand. The next moment she was trying to grab at my sunglasses. My! Your dogs really create a mess around your house. How do you deal with it? But I guess when we love them, we forgive them easily.

Hi Sri,
I have a friend who's name is Sri too. But she's all the way in Sweden now for a year. I miss her. You reminded me of her. Anyway, about this discussion, from now on, I have not allowed my daughter to touch my glasses or my hubby's for that matter. Everytime she tried to do so, I shake my finger at her. She has learnt a bit. It takes time I guess. Glad it made you laugh

My granddaughter broke my front screen door. She went out the front screen door it was a very windy day and she did not hold onto the door. The wind got hold of the screen door and pulled it right out of the hinges. We had to go and buy a whole new screen door.

I hope nothing happened to your granddaughter. Sometimes in this kind of situations, we are just thankful that our child is okay and not get hurt.

With 4 kids...you bet I've had many items destroyed that are things we really need. I think my car was maybe the most costly item. Being a single mom it was pretty frustrating at times because I really couldn't afford to replace these things. We got by somehow. It makes you really stop and set priorities on the importance of material items. When I was way younger, I remember getting upset when my oldest daughter ( now 31) ruined a bunch of my music tapes. She still remembers the incident. When my grandson ruined one of my tapes she got very upset with him thinking for sure,I'd be upset. Nope...its's just a tape..no big deal. Glasses are important and costly. I'd have been upset too but I'm sure it was an accident and your relatives will understand. Hope you get them fixed soon !

I have i kinda fixed. I changed the frames, lucky they found a suitable one that fit my lenses. Cost me a bomb. Being a stay at home mom, I'm also frustrated when I have to fork out extra money for these unexpected expenses. But no use getting upset over these things. My daughter is just so cute I can't be upset with her for longer than a few seconds.

I just got new frames for my lenses just now. My lenses were not meant for that frame, so the guy at the optical shop told me to be careful with them. I intended to get a new pair at the end of the year, before this happened. I guess I will change the lenses only at the end of the year. And that will cost me more money!

I have had broken my glasses before. As yet my daughter hasn't been the one responsible. May not get so lucky after my son is born. But we have an Americas Contacts and Eyeglasses here. Makes it a bit more affordable. So we usually buy 2 pair at a time. That way we have a pair to fall back on.

I used to have an old pair and I thought I still had them. I usually keep one pair for backup, but I could not find it. Maybe I threw it away because it must have corroded or something. When I have the extra money I will get another pair for back up.

Hehehehee! "Were there other things your kids broke..." Are you kidding? My toddler broke, and busted and cut just about anything, and all we could mostly do was be relieved she didn't get hurt in the process. Those little angel-devils will run to get a scotch tape or a glue so you can put it all together again - you look into their eyes and see just pure innocence. What can we do? We just love them so much!

My daughter has broken many things too! Some of them were her new toys. She broke the head of a duck, hats and feet of a caterpillar, and many more, on the first day she got the toy. Your toddler is so cute! Wait till my daughter learns the use of a scotch tape and glue, she'd do that too! She'd probably even do it herself!

Though you havent mentioned the age of your daughter, I presume she must be a kid.
These things happen. No need to bash her or just let her go. Explain that things broken will be thrown away. You will have to get a new one. Its not good to break things.
Do not bother much about what others would feel when you wear different sunglasses
, they might not even understand the difference.
My 5 year daughter handles cell phone quite efficiently but that particular day she had butter fingers. It slipped out of her hand and all the parts went haywire.
We were able to mend it, but that incident had an impact on her.
She is now very careful with things.

My daughter is less than 2 years old. I explained it to her. i wonder if she got it. We did not get to go visiting today afterall, but my relatives came to visit me today. I'm not wearing sunglasses because I had changed the frame at teh optical shop yesterday. Lucky!
My daughter plays with my handphone too. Whenever it beeps, she will run to it and take off the fabric casing. She has dropped it many many times but so far, it is still in good workign condition. i'm quite amazed actually. There was once she dropped my sister's new cell phone and it conked out for a few minutes. I hope my daughter will learn to take care of things as she gets older.

My daughter broke my glasses when she was 2. I was asleep, and apparently she toddled over to me, picked my glasses up from the end table, where I though they would have been safe, and snapped them in half. I had no other pair to wear, and I cannot see ten feet in front of me without them. That was a hard few weeks while I waited for my new ones.
All three of my children got a hold of steak knives one day, while I was in the bathroom, and took them to my couch. It was a beautiful sectional couch that I had just gotten from a friend, and in less than two minutes, they cut every cushion on it and the sides. They were 2,3. and 6 at the time. My Mom and I spent a good hour or more sewing the holes so it could still be used. Talk about upset!!
I think each of my kids has pulled a few stunts in their young ages, and each time, I get upset, they go to their rooms for a while, a very long while, and I have to fix the problem one way or another. Parenthood is so full of challenges.LOL

A few hours without proper prescription was alread tiring for me. But you had to endure for a few weeks. Why did it take so long? For us, they can do it within three days or so. Nowadays they send the lenses to be cut at the labs, not at the optical shop.
Steak knives? Oh my goodness! That's terrible. Well, just pretend that an angry cat did it. I wonder what kind of stunts my daughter will be up to next. I have to constantly watch her every move.

I definitely value my daughter more than anythign else in the world. I have had that pair of glasses for about two to three years now and it's time for a check-up on my eyes and get a new pair. So it's about time anyways.

Oh well that happens and I really don't think your daughter did that on purpose. Well I guess its okay to go to your relatives wearing that you just have to explain what happen and I am pretty sure they will understand your situation. Maybe you could ask the optical shop to have your eyepiece ready before the meeting with you relatives by then you won't have to worry about how you look. If not, well you have to wear that old sunglasses I guess.

I don't think the optical shop can do it that quickly. But I managed to get something done just now. I went there and changed the frame. The guy tried a few pair of glasses to see if my lenses fit into any of their frames. Luckily one was a close match. It cost me a bomb! Just for the frames! But he told me I could come back to have my lenses changed another time, but not for free.

Our daughter broke one of the arrows in her daddy's laptop when she was about 9 months old. We didn't get mad --- I mean, she's just a baby. We had to put tape on it so it won't get lost.We never got around to having it repaired but we found a way to work around it.
My husband wears glasses too and when Gia was younger, she'd grab them too from daddy's face. We'd stop her and say it wasn't nice. Sinceshe is just a kid and doesn't listen much to our please of "no" or "stop", we just try to be alert and aware of every move she makes. Even until now that she is two years old.
Just let your relatives know what happened. You don't really need to wear the sunglasses (unless you really can't see anything). I'm sure they would understand that these things really happen to parents of "cute" little kids. LOL!

Everyone says that she's cute and everything. I remembered my aunt calling my young cousin "destroyer" because when he was a little kid, he kept breaking lots of things. But now he's old enough to tell what's right and what's wrong.
Even though I was visibly upset, I did not scold her. I just told her that she broke my glasses and we have to get it repaired or buy a new one. When I wore my sunglasses, she looked at me and was amused. She wanted to grab that one too! Sigh! I had to tell her not to do that.
Although I can see, though blur, without my glasses, I needed to have the sunglasses in case my daughter is up to some other mischief at my relative's place.
