Why does the PTC sites pay us for reading their own links?

Almost many of the mylotters are members at various PTC sites too. I think you would have noted that all PTC sites display its own ads like "upgrading to premium", "joining the forum"..Why is that? Why don't they put them as announcements? Why should they put them as ads and in return pay us for reading their own links?
