A friend of mine once told me that learning a new language reduces the chances of having Alzheimer's disease. Do you believe in it?

Science isn't exactly sure what causes Alzheimer's Disease. There is a genetic form or Alzheimer's, but some people get it without having the gene. Studies have shown you reduce your risk of Alzheimer's by keeping your mind active--continually learning, like doing the puzzles mentioned before, reading and learning a new language would all be things that would help reduce your risk, but not necessarily keep you from getting it, eventually.

yes, i think that there is some validity to these findings. i think it is not so much the language, but doing something with your mind and keeping your brain working. i have heard of and read numerous reports about alzheimer's and dementia, and they say that you have less of a risk of developing it if you do things that keep your brain active on a daily basis. these reports suggest things like doing crossword puzzles, logic puzzles, games like sudoku, and even reading. it makes sense to me, but i know it is not a rule across the board. my grandfather is in the early stages of dementia. he was always a big reader, so i guess that did not help him.

hi merlibradley I have heard that also, and doing jigsaw puzzles, and cross word puzzles, and crypto quotes, and doing a lot of reading, also learning something new like a musical instrument all these keep your brain working so well, and greatly reduce the chances of having Alzheimer's disease. I know it seems to be working for me as I am almost 82 and have still got as good a mind as ever. So yes I do believe that using our brains more helps immensely.
