Yes you are right. New born babies are sleep around 16-20 hours a day. Actually I don't know the exact reason but I read it an article that newborn baby does not know he difference between night and day. She/he needs to sleep and feed when she/he feels hungry. Usually newborn sleeps two to four hours at a time and woke up when they want a feed. When they start to play automatically their sleeping time get reduced. Most of the mothers are worried about the long time sleep (2-4 hours) but studies tells that there is no need of worry when they want a feed they won't sleep and don't let you sleep. All the best to all mothers in Mylot.

yes u r wright.... actually the newborns starting from the first to 12th month ...the period is known as neonatal period which is the period in which there is highest metabolism...their growth rate is the hghest...actually there are two growth peaks in which the growth is maximum from all age group... the first hrowth rate is at the neonatal period thus the baby requires sleep more than the adults as they work more internally....the second growth is at adolescet when reproductive system is developing.... sleep helps in maintaining proper equillibrium of body's each and every process.

the newborns are in a neonatal phase which requires high energy for the metabolic demands sponsored by the various growing tissues....there are two growng phases during life...the first is the neonatal and secnd is the adolescence.... in both phases very high metabolism is undergoing in the body ...thus new borns , in order to get accomplished with the burden have to set bac towards equillibrium by sleeping long hours..sleep provides them with necessary rest and laying down energy required for further developmental processes... thus neonated sleep long hours.. i hope u got the required answers

My baby was like that when he was just newborn. Newborn babies have that behavior and it's normal. One of the reasons behind what appears to be excessive babies' sleep is the fact that the baby is still adjusting to a new environment, and experiencing a rapid bit of growth at the same time. A lot of sleep for babies early on is a good thing. Proper development demands that babies sleep a lot. Growth hormones are secreted by the pituitary gland at a much faster rate while babies sleep(http://www.wisegeek.com/why-do-babies-sleep-so-much.htm). It's a part of natural order of things. After few months their sleeping behavior change. They going to be up most of the time and have few time for sleeping.

This is because their first few months are spent getting strong so they need as much sleep they can get to grow fast. In the tummy, they were not really able to "sleep" per se. When they go out in the world, they sleep to grow. Their sleeping patterns also changes from time to time for a few years until they establish a pattern.
