I only have a one fan, on the side, and fan for the power supply.. LOL.. hehe, it depends on the capacity of your power supply, as long as the power supply can make, you can put any numbers of fan. LOL.. hehe.. ^_^

I have two fans in my CPU.It depends upon the hardware you have.If you require more cooling then you can add another fan or you can replace the cabinet with a bigger one.

The number of fans in any CPU was limited by the cabinet that you are using. I am using Zebranics LAVA cabinet and the maximum number is limited to 3 apart from the one that came with motherboard and processor. I had only 2 fans aprt from the one with motherboard. My cabinet contains some thermal controlling system that runs fans when the temperature of the CPU exceeds the limit only. Typically they work only for 10 min for a hour of CPU running. Why do you need to extenc your fans. Does your CPU releasing more heat than that your fans can't cool it.
