I live in a household with my wife, 3 kids, 2 cats and a dog. Between this motley crew, we seem to always fall behind on housework and we're constantly losing things. The other day, my wife bought a bottle of aspirin, which she insists she put on the counter in the kitchen, and now she can't find it...so she decided to go out and buy another bottle. In my mind, I am thinking that if she'd just put it in the cupboard where it belonged, we wouldn't be here right now. However, this is just one of countless examples of the issues that go on around our house.
I guess what I need to know if this? Are other peoples lives disorganized when they have a young family? It seems to me like we were never this bad off before, but we're constantly behind on housework and general up-keep. Plus, things like the aspirin incident listed above happen all the time. It's very frustrating to me...not to mention that it's can become expensive to buy things twice just because someone was too lazy to put it where it belongs in the first place.

Your life sounds just like mine. It seems that no matter how hard we try to keep things clean and organized, we just fall behind.
I'm not exactly sure what the solution is, lol. If only I could afford a maid.

Oh yes, I forgot to add that we have 3 children, 3 dogs, 2 parakeets, 1 cockatiel, guinea pig, 1 fish and 1 iguana.

I do agree, everything should have a place. Although in our house that's a really challenge since there are no closets on the main floor and the bedroom closests are coat closet size. Aren't old houses fun?!?!
It is hard to find a place for everything and I have yet to succeed at this at the kitchen seems to always be a disaster area. Of course it's also where we enter the house 99% of the time. So shoes and coats land here too.
We really don't have any furniture that offers any storage either. I'm so waiting for a new house in a couple years so some of this will change. But I must say I've thrown out a lot of stuff because I just get tired of moving it around, especially when we already have 20 coloring books for example. I rotate them around, but the boys aren't the craziest about coloring either. So some I give away. But when I do clean the kitchen I feel so much better. I know our house will never look like a magazine, and I'm okay with that.

Organization is key to keep things sane in my home. I am married with 3 small children and to keep things going smoothly it is imperative for me to keep things in an orderly fashion. I keep their clothes organized in drawers, in the closet, and in bins. for example:
My 8 year old daughter I divide her closet so that her sweaters are in bins , her skirts are hanging on the top rack, her jeans are hanging on the bottom rack, and her shirts hang on a rack off to the side. I have stickable hangers on the wall that house her belts. In drawers in her room I put her pajamas in one, her undergarments in another, her short sleeved shirts in one, her long sleeve shirts in another, her socks in one, and her tights/leggings in another. This helps me so much in finding things.
My other 2 childrens rooms are organized in about the same way except I have a son and he does not need a drawer for tights/leggings.
You know my kids room is more organized than my own bedroom.
The kitchen is an essential to keep organized in order for it to keep clean everything has its own place. That helps cut down on the possiblility of buying things over and over again.
