and made her cry....it is true, we have a visitor staying for a week and the other day he said something to her and it made her cry.
I think I had best explain to you in a little more detail.....
My Mum and Dad have gone on holiday for a week and they have a budgie, we are looking after him for the week. Now this budgie can talk, and he is called George, but he calls himself "Georgie" it sounds like he is saying "Georgia". My daughters name is "Georgia". You can see where I am going with this now cant you?
Anyway, she was sitting there next to the cage when of a sudden George, the budgie, shouts out "georgie, georgie" well she thought that was brilliant, she thought he was shouting her, and then the next minute he shouts out "Georgie is a pest" and she thought that the budgie was calling her a pest and she cried!! She was really upset, once I had explained to her that he was not calling her she was OK, but I could not stop laughing!
Have any of your pets ever made your children cry?
Has anyone else got a talking pet?
ps, photo is an old one taken earlier in the year, I would have posted a new one but the batts gone in my camera and so it would take ages to charge. He is no different though now than in the photo!

I used to have a friend that had two parrots that talked a lot. Most of their talking was to each other and it was so cute I used to get stoned and then sit for hours and listen to them. They swore a lot because the language at my friends house was a variety of words, as you can imagine.
But then one day after about 5 years, my friend's wife left him and since she was the one that looked after them, wanted to take them with her. She tried to, but he stopped her and she left without them. The poor birds were never looked after, after she left. He hardly ever fed them or gave them water so I would go over and do it for him. But I couldn't clean their cages as they were just too disgusting and since he never cleaned them you can imagine how bad they were.
After about a month I felt so bad for those birds that I secretly phoned the human society and reported it. They went into his house and took the birds away from him. He was lucky they never charged him with animal cruelity. He never, to this day, knew who reported him and I feel a little bit guilty but I just had to do it. Parrots can live to 400 years old and since these poor things were only just over 5 years old, he got them as babies, they had a lot of years left to live, if they were taken care of properly. I had to do it. I am no longer friends with him anymore as I didn't want a friend like him, that could be so cruel to the poor things.

Thanks, I thought so to at the time and I still do. I am glad I did it, reported him. At least the birds are in a safe home now, I hope. I don't think the human society would have put them down, as those birds were worth over $5000 a piece.

You did the right thing, I would have done the same, in fact I have on one or two occasions.

That's funny. It took me a long time to catch on, lol. I wasn't sure what a budgie was... so that had me confused. I thought for a minute it was a person, lol.

I think that they are called a budgerigar or something like that, but they are just shortened to budgies over here. It is one of the most common birds kept as a pet, they come in two main colours, green and blue, they are a lovely bird.

I've never heard of it, but I'm not a huge bird fan. I've heard of the main breeds like parakeet and finch and love birds, etc. Those are the smaller ones but I think they're the most common pet bird in my area.

That's a cute story, gemini_rose. I'm sorry it made your daughter cry. I have never had talking pets. We had some parakeets for a while and my husband had them saying a few little things (but not really).
My dogs have made my son cry a time or two. Just little stuff like they knocked him down when he was a baby.... but he usually always ended up laughing before it was all over.

Once a bird learns to say one thing, they pick up pretty quick then, I dread to think what he will have learned to say after being in our house for a week. I reckon he will turn the air blue once my parents get him back.

This is such a funny story. The poor child is how old? I hope this doesn't make her dislike the bird. I hope George and Georgia can mend fences. I've never had a talking pet, because I'm sort of afraid of something like this happening or that it will tell my secrets to world.

She is two, but she knows now that it was not aimed at her but at the bird himself. I remember taking them to a zoo once you know and there was a parrot there, my eldest son who was about 14 at the time went and spoke to it, it said hello to my son. My son said "hello" back and then the next minute the parrot shouted in the loudest voice "ere, look at this t*sser". I could not believe my ears, and then when it said it again everyone who was there just fell about laughing!

The only reason only humans can talk is they can put sense in their words, well at least some of them. That fun to hear, but then it's not so funny. I think you should tell your daughter about something called as ignoring. No offence, but it's too sensitive of her to take a parrot's blabber to heart. It looks good, but appearances are always deceiving. '

Shes very much like her mum, she hurts once but then it bounces off her, she understands now it was not aimed at her and thinks it is funny.

Yes, my Dad told me I was not allowed to teach him any naughty words, but I cannot be held responsible for what my mouth has to say, it has a mind of its own!

LOL! When I read your title, I thought that I would be reading about a rude visitor who is staying at your house and I was prepared to tell you to ask him to go away and leave your family alone and then... this is all about one smart bird... A good topic and a good story!
Your daughter is so cute that she reacted that way to the bird and that shows you have an intelligent daughter that is very aware of herself and would not let people (or sometimes, animals) simply say things about her. I hope that she has understood the whole thing by now and did not take any "action" against the bird.
Cheers!

I am glad that you found it funny, it was funny. She is only 2 but is pretty intelligent, I explained to her that he was not talking to her but about himself and she seemed to understand, he says it a lot and she laughs now.

Sounds like your daughter was shocked at being called a pest by a budgie especially after she was so proud thinking he was saying her name!!! I think your daughter shouldn't take it to heart and next time should say it back to George, see how George likes being called a pest!!
I am often called a pest but only in a joking way by friends. I have never had talking pets so haven't gone through the name calling stage with animals.
