How would you define a writer?

Do you consider yourself a writer if you haven't been published yet or is someone a writer if he/she can express what he/she feels?
I think that a writer is someone who can express what he/she feels through writing. Writing is the extension of one's thinking. It is regardless of the form of writing you have done or the simplicity of it. What i feel is important is expressing what you feel and invoking a response from another person is what makes you a writer.

I consider myself to be a writer as I already have three published stories. Even before that I considered myself to be one, can't say why. hehehe.
I write because it gives a vent for my feelings which I may not express openly.

i know what you mean, re: expressing feelings. there are some things that you just have to express but can't for fear of hurting others and i think, that writing is your best outlet.

A writer is a person who writes to express what may be hard for them to express in other media. A professional writer is someone who is employed to write for money although, hopefully, they enjoy it too because it's a hard road if you don't love it. Until October 2nd, I'd been a professional writer for one year. However, I was a writer long before that. My mother has memories of me literally crawling after people on the floor asking them to write my stories down. Everybody was really happy when I learned to write and even more so when I learned to type.

It's hard to define what a writer is these days, because anybody can get published, even if it's on the internet or by paying for their own print or ebook. I guess I'm a snob because I don't consider someone a writer unless they can write well. If they're writing fiction, they should know how to develop a plot and characters, and no matter what kind of writing they're doing, they should be able to spell and use grammar correctly. A lot of people who write on the internet write badly, and no differently than they did when they had to write compositions for high school classes. Just because you can put words down on paper or in a word processor, that doesn't make you a writer.

I think one is boern that way or not. If you are you find yourself better able to express yopurself through writing rather than verbally. I am one of those people. I consider myself to be a writer, and I am published. I love that I am able to use my great joy to make a living.
Cheers

writing, for me, is one way to express yourself. i also think that writing is a way of living. more of a lifestyle. if you can't imagine yourself a day without writing, then you are a writer regardless being published or not.
as the saying goes, if you really want to be a writer... never a day without a line. :)

A writer is being crazy. He/ she likes to think, write crazy things and love to be crazy writing some sort of stuff.
