Beware of scheming appliance stores!

My mom was about to be a victim of an appliance store scheme of luring the customers to buy expensive appliances from them with a small amount for downpayment and an eternity to pay the remaining balance. The salesperson explained the product really well and threw in a lot of items along with the product she was about to purchase. Their products also sounded really good and very convenient. My mom was really bowled over with the idea but opted to consult me first. Its a fortunate thing my brother asked me to research about the company first and their products because it all sounded too good to be true. Lo and behold! There were lots of complaints about the company being bogus and only filled their customers with lots of promises. Whew! What a relief to have found that out before we fell prey to their schemes. I hope none of your were victims of these schemes. If you were, pls. do share your story so we can all learn from it. And for you who didn't fall into this trap yet, please beware. Thanks a lot!

Here in Metro Manila, a very common slimy, sneaky "modus operandi" appliance stores do in an apparent effort to upsell goes like this. They have in display all shape, size, model of a particular item, e.g. electric fan, with price tags on them. If you ask for the least expensive, the sales clerk will say "no more stock for that one, sold out already" and will try his darnedest to sell you the more expensive models. Of course, they are all so courteous and overly nice as they say "oh sorry maam, we have no more of the color you like, how about this (same color but more expensive)", and "oh sorry maam we have no more of that item on stock why not choose this or that (more expensive model)". This actually happened to me three times, in three different stores. The last time, I was so irked I asked the sales clerk why they bothered to display an item that they could not sell, and I got a very nasty response. I thought it was an isolated case, but a friend had the same experience with a television set, and my niece had the same experience with a personal computer set!

Already been scammed once. I once bought a refrigerator in installments thinking it has 0% interest rate. But ended up paying more processing fee than the interest would be. I thought I was a fool to buy that without inquiring properly and decided will never let that happen to me again.
