Is your dog afraid of thunderstorms?

My dog is terrified of storms. He will shake, hide in small places, and even urinate somewhere in the house when it storms. There are calming pills that we can buy at the petstore with all natural ingredients that will help calm your dog during storms, fireworks, etc. We buy these for our dog and we give them to him when it looks like it is about to storm.
They help calm him and he does relax but he is still anxious. We will then sit with him and pet him and things until the storm passes. Does anyone else have a dog that does this? If so, what do you do? If you give your dog calming pills, do they work? I just hate it when he is so anxious. I think it might also have something to do with his age as he is at least 10 years old.

Yes, My Collie is. But thankfully not to the extent yours and I know some other dogs get. But when it thunders he starts whining and making strange noises- he gets a close to me as possible. I feel so bad for the poor guy!
Eventually he calms down and relaxes. I think it was because He was a kenneled dog before I got him, so he spent his time out of doors and that was probably a real scary time for him!

Ah poor guy! It's a good thing you took him home with you! I don't know why my dog does this. When he was younger storms never bothered him. The only thing I could think of was that lightning struck close one time we weren't home.

Actually his fear isn't because of the storm itself or his age, but because of the noise from the thunder. Dogs hearing is so sensitive that loud noises like thunder hurt their ears very badly. I have my sister's dog with me for the Fourth of July and Halloween because of the enormous amount of noise that is caused in her neighborhood. Abby, my sister's dog, goes absolutely crazy and shakes, whines, and tries to hide (she is 7). Even calming pills don't help her. So, since I live in the country, she ends up with me for a couple of days to protect her from the stress.
If there is a really quiet room where the noise isn't so bad, place your dog in that room to see if he will be more relaxed. When I lived in Montana I would put the dogs in the rec room in the basement. It really helped keep them calm and less anxious.
The three dogs (My two, Monica and Little Bit and Abby) can tell when my BF is coming in. He has tried being really quiet and sneaking in and it doesn't work. Their ears are so sensitive that I swear that they can hear a bird pass wind three miles away! And of course they have to let me hear about it!!! If your dog would tolerate it you might get some soft ear plugs to use when there is a storm.

What you say does make a lot of sense with the way a dog hears. My dog just gradually got to this point and gets worse as he gets older. He starts this with just hearing rain as well because he knows that usually thunder follows. My dog also lets us know if there is someone outside. We would never know if someone was outside if it wasn't for him. Thanks for sharing!

I'm glad your dog doesn't have a problem. That's great! My dog sleeps a lot as long as his beauty sleep isn't interupted or if our cat doesn't try to play with him!

My mum used to have dog like that and yet at other times she was good as gold. I think sometimes it is in their nature as with small dogs and sometimes they take the cue from their owners. They get the vibs that something is wrong when all this noise comes and just about jump out of their skins. She was okay when she got older and nobody took any notice of her. Seemed to grow out of it.

Yes, are little dog Trey is terrified of thunder, fireworks, gunshots. It is bad enough he hides but he is so scared he trembles. We have tried stuff at the pet store and also he was given valium for storms. From what I can tell it makes him tired so he is laying down and trembling.
I have made sure he has lots of hiding spots mostly in my room. I will try to tune out the noise as much as possible with fan and tv and if he is real bad and the storm seems endless I will sit with him, pet him and hum real soft. It does seem to calm him down some.
Our dog is 5 and the fears have progressed with age. I am like you in that I hate to see him suffer with being anxious to down right terrified. I do my best to comfort him but I really wish I could take his fears away.
To both our dogs, I hope they learn to trust that we will keep them safe and not to be afraid.

most dogs are like that, i think. we used to have three dogs ( only one is with us right now coz the other two passed away just recently), and all three would hide whenever there's a thunderstorm and especially fireworks. christmas eve and new year were their least favorite time of the year. the one remaining, his name is Ritchie, is the most faint-hearted of them all. he can smell thunderstorm miles away. he would immediately hide heimself inside in one of our bedrooms and won't go out until it's over. he won't even eat if the storm is still going on. no matter how long it takes. thank God, we don't have it often here.
we don't give him pills or anything. we'll just let it pass. i don't know if it has a certain effect on their emotional and mental status but i think it's not unhealthy to let our dogs be afraid of something or just let them get anxious over thunderstorm. that's a tangible evidence that they too have feelings. anyways, he knows that we're here for him whenever there's trouble aaround.

I'm sorry to hear that 2 of your dogs passed. My dog can smell them coming too and that's how I usually know they are coming. I have seen many dogs afraid of storms or fireworks, but I honestly haven't seen one as bad as my dog. He will get this bad even if it only rains because he associates rain with thunder.
I also believe dogs have feelings and have their own personality. That's why I always have felt that he is a family member, or any pet we have had for that matter. Thank you for your thoughts.

Our dog is also afraid of thunderstorms. He would run and hide in places when he hears thunderstorms or any sudden loud sounds. What we do is we put him in a room and cover his ears. During New Year where a lot of fireworks is being lit, we take him to a room at the center of the house so that the fumes and the noise would not affect him.

I never really thought about covering his ears. I normally sit with him or cuddle up beside him to try to keep him calm and at the same time. He just never stops shaking until it's over and then won't stop until he knows it's over.

The dogs we have now aren't bad when it comes to storms. We did have a dog that hated any loud noise and would start barking hours before a storm would hit and not stop until hours later. Drove us absolutely crazy. I tried all kinds of doggy sedatives with him, but nothing worked. He was outside and ran away during a big storm about four years ago and we never did find him.

We have a dog that is afraid of the thunders and fireworks. It's a pitbull and whenever there's fireworks, he jump up and down inside her cage and she even ruin her cage to run away and my brother would run after her and carry her back in the house. My brother usually cover her ears with cottons and put her at the back of the house where she cant see and hear the fireworks. She cries, shake and barks too much so we pity her. As we can see her face crying and sometimes has tears and begging us to stop the fireworks so that she wouldn't be afraid of the loud noise. We kept her warm and safe when there are thunders and fireworks.
