This is a really good point. I can't even remember my mobile number, let along someone else's. When I was younger (see now I have the age excuse) I could remember about 20 phone numbers, all the zip codes/post codes in a 100 mile radius of where I lived plus major city codes without problem. I could also remember my account numbers and the first and middle names of most files I had control over.
But I notice that most young people don't have to try to memorize anymore. Modern technology is not all for the better. I say this mainly because the use of memory was good for our brain, call it brain gym. And now we are getting lazy in mind as well as body.

I tend to agree with you though I think it's getting more and more difficult to pass this knowledge. Everything is quickening at a fast pace that we think we don't have time for trying to remember. We use calculators instead of our heads for numbers. We use Dictionary.com and spell checkers for our spelling instead of spelling bees. And as you say, our mobiles store the phone numbers we need.
Not sure how to fix this issue. Maybe go back to basics at school, that would help. And if you can do it, then make a habit of doing it in front of your friends. Jealousy through competition can work in some instances. Make them envious of your ability.
