Has anybody tried islet cell transplants or fake pancreas?

My boyfriend is 24 and he has type 1 diabetes. We have tossed around the idea of islet cell transplants but we don't know if it's the right choice. I think that taking a pill everyday for the rest of his life would be better than sticking a needle in himself but I also think well he has been doing this for 9 years what happens if he forgets to take a pill. I also read about a fake pancreas. I don't know if it is the states yet but that seems like a more promising solution. Any advice?
