What does the sentence "stupid is as stupid does" mean?

Hello everyone. Do you like watching "Forrest Gump"? I like it very much. Especially these words Momma told him.For example,"Don't ever let anybody tell you they're better than you, Forrest. If God intended everybody to be the same, he'd have given us all braces on our legs." Another sentence,which Gump said many times when being asked "are you stupid ?"His answer is always "stupid is as stupid does". I found different people have different explanation to this answer. What do you think? my Friend. Shall you explain it in your own words according to your understanding? As far as I am concerned, I am in favor of the saying:stupid can't be judged by outlook but by acting. What about you?

Hello freemn~ Forrest Gump is one of my favorites also.. I think the meaning behind, "Stupid is as Stupid does", I agree means that it is the actions... I relate to certain parts in this movie...I too had those same type of leg braces as a small child! And I think that we all in someway contribute to our days making history in our own way, that at times could affect the world in a big or small way... One of my favorite sayings from the movie is, "Life is like a box of chocolates..." Have a great day~

Thanks Shandy14.Have a great day too. Glad that you love Forrest Gump too. Do you know why does Gump need the leg braces? And you? How about your leg now? As strong as Gump?

Hi again.. I think Gump had the leg braces because his feet were turned inward. That was my problem when young..I was born breech, "feet first"...and both of my ankles were broke during birth. This made my feet turn inward, and I would trip all the time over my own feet when walking or running....I remember falling down lots as a child. When I was three years old, a Dr. put braces on my feet/legs to straighten out my feet...I wore them for two years b4 they were removed. I rember begging my mom to take them off at times b4 I would sleep...Sometimes she would and it felt great...I rember them being fairly heavy cause back then, they were made of steel.. Thanks for asking...And my feet are great now...As good as Gumps!
