Can you only have one friend at a time?

There's a lot of people that can only have one friend at a time. One day you think your really good friends with someone and hanging out, having a good time and then someone else comes along that you friend knows and your dumped for that other person. Is this an attention span thing? What do you think? Has this ever happened to you?
