There is no difference. They are just two nicknames for the same organization.
Here's the website link to the organization. www.lds.org/portal/site/LDSOrg
This will take you to the main website and explain it all. Frankly, it's all bunk to me, but that's just my opinion.

Huh? Is this a trick question? I'm confused. I thought that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was the name of the churches that Mormons attend....like Babtist go to Babtist church, Methodists go to Methodist church...Jehovah Witness go to Kingdom Hall....etc.

Not a trick question, just a question to see what others say.

They are one in the same. They follow the teachings of Joseph Campbell. It is very controvesial for some people. I do not follow the religion, but they are great people. Most of my friends go to this church and have the greatest family values.

Who's Joseph Campbell? Did you mean Joseph Smith?

Sorry. I did mean Joseph Smith. I have been reading Jospeh Campbell's mythology series about the Hero's Journey. I am very sorry about that. The Hero With A thousand Faces is an awesome book. I guess sleep deprivation is kicking in. I have three little ones that keep me up at night. Sorry about that.

The difference is the definition..
A "Mormon" is any person or religion that uses the Book of Mormon as scripture (just like a 'Christian' is any religion that believes in Jesus Christ).
Any just like there are dozens of different and distinct religion that are 'Christian' (including the LDS Church) there are also dozens of different and distinct 'Mormon' churches.
Now, people refer to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as "The Mormons" or "The Mormon Church" b/c about 98% of 'Mormons' belong to the LDS church (all of the other churches have populations in the 10s and 100s), and the others are 'break-aways' from the main branch (think Protestantism). But in reality the two terms aren't completely interchangeable.
Actually, some Mormon churches can be very similar or very different from each other, in the way Catholics and Baptists are different, or Penecostals, or Southern Baptist....etc.

Best answer so far! In fact, I've counted about 32 groups that could correctly be called "Mormons", and you and I would use the same definition... Those who consider The Book of Mormon scripture.
I happen to be part of the "about 98%", so you know which one I consider the True one, but as for the nickname, I can't see telling someone else who follows the Book of Mormon that they shouldn't use the nickname for themselves.

I have always wondered why we are referred to as Mormons...We don't call the Jewish people Moses', or the Muslim people Muhameds. Calling a group of people a name based on the title of a book, or the name of a prophet is silly. I am LDS, and that is what I say when people ask me my religion. (LDS is an abbreviation for Latter Day Saints, in case a non-member is reading this.:-) )
not really an answer to your question...sorry, guess I needed to vent. :-)
