OKay this is a true story, My friend finds 60 dollars at walmart and turns it in, a few minutes later she goes back and says she lost 60 bucks and gets the money and leaves. What would you have done in this situation? Do you think she was right in turning back around and claiming the money if it wasent hers? Would you have turned it in in the first place?

I would return it. I have found money before. If it wasn't mine to begin with what makes it mine now? That could have been some elderly person's medication money. Or maybe a mother who needed baby food. Sorry I just couldn't live with those thoughts in my head as I spent the other person's money.

I twice found $20 bills in the parking lot of the college I was going to. I kept it, because there was no way of knowing who it had belonged to.

The idea of a lost and found is that someone will know where to go and say "I lost $20.00". It should be that if the money is not claimed within some amount of time, then finders keepers - not the christmas fund.

It's always a difficult question when it's cash. We all know the right thing to do is turn it in. However, how can anyone go in and claim it, or can we know that the employee we turn it in to won't go ahead and pocket it. I guess I'd turn it in anyway and feel confident that I had done the right thing. Let the clerk wrestle with her conscience!

yes I would have to agree with you on that point lol, her intention of returning it was right and then she thought herself stupid and went back and claimed it as hers, even though it wasent lol

I would return the money or if I find it somewhere else I have to ask people around if they lost money. If nobody claims it then you can keep it. But the person who lost it might need it more than I do. I have to return it.

I probably keep it LOL! If you hand it in to the clerk, how would you know if the employee or someone else wouldn't take it.

$ - $
if it was my money then i would certainly go back and claim for the money coz i trusted tat the shopkeeper. i thought he will giv back the money to whom so ever reported lost.. i think she was right in turning back and claiming money coz its her money...if it wasnt her money then its not right on her part...if it was not my money then i probably will never report to the shopkeeper that i found the money i would wait for a while for the owner of the money to come back and claim else i would take it and if i was in need of money then i would use it myself else donate it to some orphanage..

i'd go to the store manager and surrender it so if anyone reports any lost $, the manager can give it back to the owner. usually, in situations like that, the manager would get the founder's name, address, & contact number. and in case no one claims the cash back, it would be given back to him/her anyways. i still believe store managers can be trusted :)

The money was never mine to begin with. I would turn it in and I would also give my name and phone number incase no one claims it that way they can call me and then I can collect the money. That is what banks do and the police station.

if she was going to take it anyway, why did she even bother to turn the money in? Didn't the people at the store realize that it was the same person? Yes, I have found money in the past and turned it in. The money isn't yours to begin with, who said it was yours now.

she turned it in first and then realized that she should have kept it and went back, but it was a different person so it worked out

I probably would have kept it unless I knew who it belonged to.

While I found it interesting that she first handed in the money and then turned around and claimed it,I think she is the only one who knows why she would do it and therefore as long as she can live with what she did, then that solves the discussion.I know what I would do(and have done in the past)but that is me.Sure hope though the $60 was not from your pockets.

Why she wants to turn it in and then go back and claim that she lost the 60 bucks? I dont think that it's ethical for her to do that. As for me, I would turn it in eventhough I may need the money too, but what if the one who loses the money needs the money more than I do?

I would not do what she did, in the first place she should have just kept the money why return it if you're going to lie to keep it.

Honestly, I would not have turned it it. Finders keepeers. If I had lost the 60 I would not expect someone to turn it in nor even check with the front desk about it. I know that most people will keep it and I am okay with that since thats' what I'd do.

Sorry but in my opinion your friend is a thief. If I find something that doesn't belong to me I give it back. In many cases I have been given back money that I have found and returned, either as an reward or because the owner wasn't found. I never give money to staff at the shops though as they usually just pocketed it. I always take it to the police.

Well, it was pretty pointless to turn it in if she was just going to go back for it. As far as the morality of the situation, I think it depends on the circumstances. At a place like Wal-Mart, I would probably turn the money in because it's likely that someone would come by to claim it later. If I know there's a good chance of the owner being found, it would weigh heavy on my conscience to keep the money. I think God rewards us for such actions anyway. For example, when I was in seventh grade I won $50 from a radio station, and for some reason I was mailed two checks for that amount. I returned one with a note explaining what had happend, and not only did they give me both checks after all, they sent a television crew to my house for a little "interview" (that part was somewhat embarrassing). On the other hand, I have found money at Six Flags, floating in the Atlantic Ocean, and on an empty playground, and in each of those situations I kept it with no guilt because it would have been impossible to locate the person who lost it.
