I hardly ever use things from a can anymore...

I was sorting my recyclables the other day when hubby came in and looked at the box and said we hardly ever have any tin cans anymore. It was then I realized I very seldom cook with anything out of a can anymore. This got me to wondering if it was just me or are others steering away from canned food?

I mostly have canned tuna, tomato sauce or paste, and a variety of beans when I don't have time to soak the bagged dry ones. We cook Spanish food often, so the beans and tomato sauce are a must. My cats and dogs eat dry food so no cans there. As for vegetables, I have a store close by that has a large variety of produce so now that it is cold and my garden is pooped out, I go there once a week and get the deal packages on various bell peppers, etc. clean and cut them up and put them in the freezer...also like frozen organic veggies in the bag.

I think I am lucky as we have good markets around here too. I have never really tried much Spanish cooking. I would like to though, this may lead me down a new gastronomic trail!

I never was much of a can eater in the first place. I almost always make everything from scratch. I even make all of my own homemade soups. I have the odd thing I use from a can, but very seldom. I eat all of my vegetables either fresh or frozen. The only thing I have in cans in my cupboard are all for fast eating items. So I do have a few things but not much, maybe a can of soup and a can of fruit and a can or two of mushrooms. But not much. I will be back in a minute as I want to see what else I have in the cupboard that is in a can. Okay I am back and that is it. Just a couple cans of some things, but not much.

I make my own soups too, now I have spoiled hubby and if I were to feed him soup from a can I think I would hear about it. I will admit to cans of mushrooms though, I like to buy them on sale, then use them when I don't feel like going to the store.

I don't use canned foods as often either. I'm not sure why - I didn't even notice until I read your post.

It didn't really occur to me either until hubby pointed it out.

we still use a good amount of canned food, me more than my Mom. In general though, we mostly save our canned food for hard times when we have a hard time getting fresh, dried, or frozen.

I have cans of stuff in my cupboard that I use when I don't have anything else but I have to admit I had a craving for brown beans one day about two years ago and the can still sits forlornly in my cupboard!

Hey whywiki, Nope, I still use alot of stuff from cans. I use some canned veggies like canned potatoes, corn tomato sauce. I use canned cat food every day. So in my house there still are plenty of cans to throw out in the recyle can. I kind of wish I could do away with the cans because every time I have a can I have to go take it out to the recyle can outside the apartment right away because I don't want it sitting inside the house to attract bugs. I guess as long as they make cat food in cans, I will have cans to throw out.

I forgot about the cat food cans, I would have those too but my kitties have decided they like the new meow mix wet food in the plastic cup things. So I have lots of plastic cup things!

I am trying to can my own veggies. Unfortunately my garden did not produce much this year. I do still rely on the grocery store for several canned veggies. I try to buy fresh as much as I can. Are you cooking with fresh items or are you canning/freezing your own as well? I am looking to be more self sufficient and not so dependent on the stores for my foods.

I would can my own but alas I rent and have no garden to play in. I am just lucky to live near some great farms. I think the farms and gardens around here didn't produce well this year either. I found the kernels on the corn were tiny this year. Oh well maybe mother nature will be more kind next year.
