Okay now that the mess is cleaned up.......
Someone, somewhere in myLot made a comment about splaing of greasy foods etc in the microwave. They suggested using a coffee filter as a splash gaurd. Well I decided to try this and let me say it worked great. I used it to cover left over spaghetti sauce the other day and it worked like a charm. No greasy splatters inside my microwave. As the photo shows the filter collected all the splatterings. This is now going to ease my cleaning of the insides of the microwave greatly. Have you ever tried this at all? Do you have any other neat little tips such as this to share here?

I've done that in the past as well.
Coffee grounds are also great for adding to the top of the soil
of houseplants as food. I do this a lot. I do this weekly.

I used coffee filters for arts and crafts projects with preschoolers. Also cheap white paper plates and saucers.

I buy a hige packet of generic coffee filters and it is a lot cheaper than using paper towels. Even generic ones get really exspensive at times for this purpose.

A few years ago I bought this cover that was round and had weights around it to keep it on the dish I was microwaving. It was handwashable and reusable, except I didn't like using it for things like eggs, because it was difficult to clean when there was egg pieces in between the fabric..So next time I cook eggs, I will use coffee filters, they are also the perfect size for eggs since I have the 4 cup size..Thanks for the info Grandpa Bob..

One thing I don't like is pasta drying out in the microwave. Plastic wrap isn't good to use though. So, I started dampening down a paper towel and I lay it across my food. No more spatters.
An easy way to clean the microwave is to put in a coffee mug or glass measuring cup full of water. Heat for about 4 minutes until its all steamy inside. Let it stand that way a few minutes then wipe it down. The steam loosens all the spatters. I also sometimes put half a lemon in the water. The lemon makes it smell nicer too.

Anytime at all.
I, for the life of me, can't recall where or whom stated this in a discussion.
But thanks to them either way.

Paper towels work well also.
But I think coffee filters are cheaper to use really.

I have never heard of that but I will definatley try it.....make sense. Like for heating chili...seems it always blows up and by using the coffee filter it would be more like a cap then just laying a paper towel over it! thanks for the tip!

hi Grandpa Bob then the coffee filter really does work, I had
been told that and I doubted it as usually tomato sauce is the
'worst splatterer of all. So I will use that the next time, as'
we always have some filters around. That will also save on the pie plate gettingall splattered with tomato sauce too. I usually put a pie plate over my dish to heat up leftover tomato sauce, and it leaves an ungodly mess on the pie plate. yuck. thanks for the tip. happy postings back atcha.

Wow, that's a great idea, I have to try it. We sometimes use papertowels but they don't cover things that well and get stuck to the food. I can see how a coffee filter would create a bit of a dome and not be attached to the food. Thanks for the tip;)

That sounds like a brilliant idea, GB. The problem we have with our microwave is that our son often explodes eggs in it! I've tried various types of egg cookers, but none of them work - we always seem to get an exploded egg. I've told my son to try cooking them for half the time and then checking - but it never works. Maybe a coffee filter over the top would solve the problem for good!

Maybe he does it intentionally?
I've done this just for the mere entertainment of watching it explode.
Not lately though.

Hey I have to try that! I usually use a paper towel but we usually run out of them and now I know what to use. We always have alot of filters. Thanks for the tip. To clean microwave in a quart sized bowl add water and a few drops of dish soap put in microwave on high for 4-6 minutes and and let set for half an hour. It will make clean up a breeze. It softens all the stuff in there that splattered.

Wow!! I had never considered using these. I might have to get some extras around here to use, as anytime you can prevent splatters in a Microwave that is nice for sure. Who really likes going in and having to clean out their microwave all of the time. This is a Great idea indeed.

I've seen microwave splash guards at dollar stores before. They looked like a fine mesh (cheesecloth?) stretched in a ring (like the top of a tennis racket does). They would be more environmentally friendly because they could be washed out and reused, however, I'm not sure just how sanitary they would be over time.
The only trick I've learned about cleaning inside a microwave is to put in a cup of water and nuke it to boiling. If you have lemon juice or vinegar, add some to the water. The steam softens up the gunk inside the microwave, and makes it easier to clean up. And of course, vinegar and lemons are age old natural cleaning products.

Hey grandpa bob! I don't drink coffee! Yeah, that does
sound like a great idea! I sometimes use a paper towel
to keep splatters from messing up the microwave. If
not I just make sure whatever I am heating up has a
lid on it! I hate having to clean up the mess on the
inside of the microwave especially if it is something
like spaghetti sauce! I try to make sure that the inside
of the microwave stays as clean as possible and doesn't
get any weird smells. My boyfriend heats up his stupid
rice and beans that really smell awful and I always have
to "air" out the microwave to get the smell of the beans
out! Not such an easy trick! If anyone can give me a tip
about that I sure would be happy to hear it!
