At least once a month in our local news paper, they have a section where they post pictures of people who has written bad checks. In this section is a picture of the person and the amount of the checks they have written.
I have seen several people I know in the section It is called:
WORTHLESS CHECK WRITERS.
What is you input on this?

thats great! people should be held responsible for it, so i dont see anything worse than public humiliation. however, i wonder if there are some privacy issues involved and since we dont know the entire story, i'd be hesitant to believe it all. i have only ever written one bad check, because the bank closed the account by mistake. i quickly fixed it, but still, it hung over my head for a while. i always had to pay cash there, since one mistake left me on their 'nono' list.
and while we're at it, who writes checks any more? i mean really

I think the title is a little harsh. I know the businesses hate bad checks, but sometimes it is just a mistake on the patrons part. Or it's something totally out of their hands.
When my husband was in the Army they deposited his check directly into the bank. We went to the grocery store and bought groceries. A few days later we got notice of insufficent funds and that the check had bounced. We were very confused because we still had money in the account.
The bank's computer had messed up. Everybody who's check got deposited on a certain day didn't show up until three or four days later!
We had to pay a late check fee because the bank screwed up. After that we switched banks.

That would be a situation that would concern me. That is what I had in mind. I guess if it was a persistent pattern, it would be different. We have in the paper when district court hears cases brought by different businesses for insufficient funds checks.

I can see the paper posting the names of the people who have been charged with passing bad checks as part of reporting court cases. I don't think they should be printing the pictures of the people. That seems a bit extreme. It could be interesting to see people you know. But what if there was a printing error and you saw your name and picture in that column?

Well I have not written a check in years but I think there is a serious privacy issue here. Also you have no idea if the person wrote the check knowing that there was no money and if they did and they just did not care or was it a simple mistake.
If the check was written knowing there was no money then it is fraud and is a crime but it this was a mistake and they did not know that the money was gone then I have a problem with it. You also do not state if it is a single check or habitual that also makes a difference.

Hi Chevee,
I think its a good idea to do that, they will never be trusted and to show other people what will haappen to them if they give out worthless checks out, we never use checks as we pay everything by card or cash. Love & Hugs.

This made me laugh Chevee!! It must be really embarrassing for those people who have their pictures printed, i'd be scared to write a cheque! I have never seen anything like this before, it makes methink of a hundred years ago or so when they would put in the paper people that had stolen shepp etc!!! I suppose it fills the paper when there isn't much news though!! lol xxx

Hi Chevee,
OMG, that is very embarrassing! At least they are announcing to the public about these people as the people will become aware!
ANyway, I am sure they learn a lot from what they did!

I think it's wrong to publicize these people for one doesn't know their situation and why they wrote the checks to begin with. To put everyone in one catagory is wrong because not everyone is in the sticky situation while others are doing it just because they can. Some people are in such dire straights that they have to do something in order to get groceries so they can eat but then I know someone who would write a check knowing full well that it would bounce and they'd pay the fees that accured which is like paying for the item or dinner twice because of the fees but this stupid woman didn't care. Now it's these kinds that need to be listed but since one can't know the why's in all situations, then they shouldn't publicize any of them.

Wow chevee! That must be really something! If we had that
where I live I think they would need a whole newspaper
just for that list alone! I think that is a very good
thing if you live in a small town. It gives the local
store owners a heads up on who not to take checks from.
I have never heard of that before. It is a serious offense
that is punishable by prison time in some places. I am
assuming that these are just petty worthless check
writers and not serious criminals?

I think it is a great idea. Our town is going all electronic, and anyone who hasn't doesn't accept checks anymore. So they scan the checks and it reads them like a debit/credit card transaction.
Funny your paper does that too. Our paper puts everyone who has been arrested, everyone who has received a ticked, anyone who has called the police and why. I have had friends from back home read that section and laugh when they read "Manager of Sonic called the police after a milkshake was thrown at the window". They put everything in the paper. Kinda embarrassing. And from time to time I have seen something about someone writing a bad check. So I think it is a good idea and warns other businesses who to look out for.
