I've worked retail for most of my working life and I hate it when customers go through the express (10 or 20 items or less) checkout. There is a reason for these signs and to have these checkout lanes. It's to make sure that the people with only a few items don't have to wait for a customer with 50 or 100 items to check out. Why is it so hard for people to understand this? Do you do this? Why or why not?

Oh does that drive me insane. I really do not understand why it is so hard for them either, there isn't even enough room for their items, but they insist on using it. And we can't tell them no, even though the lanes are clearly marked 20 items or less. What really gets me is when they come up to you, and KNOW that they have more then 20 items! "I might have more then 20, is that okay?" NO!!!! But of course we can't say that. And that is why I would never go through an express with more then 20 items lmao.

I no longer work retail, I stay at home with my babies but, I think thats part of the reason I quit. The rudeness of the customers. I was always told that I couldn't turn them away but, I told them anyway. I would be as polite as possible and explain that it wasn't fair to the people with only a few items. If it wasn't busy at my register or the other express lanes I wouldn't mind so much if it was only a few items over but, it still bothered me some.

The only thing we can really say is if they ask, we can say that we can take them "this time only". It sometimes gets the point across. You still want to reach across that counter and strangle them, pointing at the sign and probably speaking in tongues lol. Now I don't mind quite as much if someone comes through my register with a lot of little things, or several of the same thing. Though you sometimes really want to smack them when they come up to you and go..."I have 24 of these", and its not the only thing in their cart lmao. Umm, obviously, you have more then 20. ;)

OMGoodness - this is one of my biggest pet peeves! I usually say something to the cashier like "Isn't this the express line? Well, this person has way more than the allowed number of items - it's not fair." I say it "over" the culprit making sure they know I'm talking about them - I even rally the other people waiting too - 9 times out of ten, the "turkey" goes to another line. I can be rather loud and persistent when I think I'm right! LOL

I do the same thing. Sometimes I even say something to the customer that has the excessive load. I try to point out the sign literally.

As a rule, I don't do this. The signs are obviously there for a reason. I have however been in walmart and the checkout girl in the express lane is just standing there doing nothing while long lines are at all the other registers. I have had just about 15 or 20 items...a bit more than the express lane accepts. Even if I had 50 items, I'd probably ask if it's ok considering she is just standing there.

I can understand that if there is more then one express register open and they are all not doing anything. If they are the only one open or the only one not doing anything I wouldn't agree with it. I also wouldn't agree with 50 items. The express registers aren't big enough for more then 10 or 20 items. The bagging area isn't even big eough for 20 items sometimes.

I won't even go in the express lane when I have 11 items if it says 10 items or less. If I am not in a terrible hurry then I can wait in a regular line like everyone else.

I love the express lane. They are so convenient when you want to just run in and grab a few things without having to wait in line forever. It irritates me when there are people in the express lane with a cart load of stuff. So, I don't go through the express lane if I have more than a few things.

I think you would understand the reason if you could change yourself into a customer. At the angle of psychology, it can be understandable for all of their doing.

I am also a customer. I hate it when people do it when I am shopping also. I'm not a psychologist, I'm a regular ordinary person that thinks that even strangers should show respect to one another. I feel that doing this is disrespectful to the cashiers and to the customers that have to wait in line behind the rude over-flowing cart people that pretend they can't read.

Since it is a new concept where I stay at, I don't see many people doing it. In fact, I find that people with just 2 or 5 items will wait out in the queue instend of using the express checkout!

OMG, this is one of my biggest pet peeves!! The other day I saw a woman at Wal-mart, she had her cart heaping full. I don't think she could have put any more groceries on top of this basket if she tried. The bottom was full too. Needless to say, she pulled her cart up to one of the self checkout "fast" lanes. She had a small child with her, and no other help for unloading her groceries and getting them back in the cart as fast as possible, so she could get done quicker. Idiots, LMAO!!

I once got told off by an assistant for checking less than ten items though a regular checkout! Not very nicely either. She said that was what the ten or less till was for. She was right, but at the end of the day it's my money that helps pay her wages and she had no one else waiting. (I started a discussion about it about 6 months ago.) If it expressly says ten or less and I have more I don't go there.

That's just crazy, The regular checkouts don't say "more then 10 items" or "ten items or more". Some people are nuts.

The only time that I may go in to the express check out lane and I don't have that many items when I'm only like 2 or 3 items over. I can find it frustrating though that there are people who bring 20 items more to the 10 items or less lane. It frustrates me and I only have 2 items over. I think people do it because they see the long lines and they don't want to wait or they just didn't count what was in their basket and figured that they had 10 or 20 items in their baskets. I can understand your frustration.

Firstly never dare a customer. A customer is the reasion why a retail estblishment exists. Waht really needs to be done despite the signs, is to have staff to direct people to the correct lane. ther will always be one odd customer who is adamant and unreasonable, you will have to be patient with them.

You're right the customer is the reason a retail establishment exists but that doesn't mean they can be rude to the employees of such an establishment or to the other customers. I don't think there needs to be a traffic director...the lanes are marked clear as day...all they have to do is look. I no longer work retail so I will not be patient with them...I will be just as rude to those people as they are to the employees and other customers.

A customer does not have a right to be rude i agree, but at tiems some are in a hurry and try to take a short cut. They should still follow the rules as it becomes unfair to the other customers. Some peopel are habitual offenders and they should be sorted out. some may have made a mistake genuinely and can be excused.

I hate when people do that. When I go shopping I usually only get a max of 20. I just dont do heavy shopping. So I rely on those express lanes. So when I get up there and I see a woman with a buggy loaded full and thats not the only line that is open. I just get really mad. Especially when they cut you off and jump in the line just before you get there while your child is sitting there screaming there head off because they are ready to go home. As if they think they are in more of a hurry.

People do this because they are just selfish, rude and ignorant. They do NOT care about anyone around them. They think they are the only important person in the whole entire world!!! When I am in a line up near or behind someone like this I say something to them to make sure they know they are in the wrong line or I say it to people around me. I do it to embarrass them enough to leave. Some of them are still to ignorant to leave!!

I was in a Walmart once with my friend while she was getting her hair cut. The hair place was right across from one of the express lanes where you scan the items yourself. This lady had a grocery cart full of food and proceeded to check herself out. I was just staring at her with a disgusted look on my face because there were people behind her with 3 items who had to go to a regular check out. I didn't make it any of my business but i hope someone complained that day about that lady.

I hope so too, that is so rude. the self checkouts are basically the same as express. I would have had to say something to her or atleast to my friend LOUDLY so she could hear me.

If I'm really in a hurry I don't even look at the express line, I look for a line that has a few people in it that have just a few items, but more than the express lane allows. I can usually get through faster that way than waiting for all those people who can't read or count. On a particularly slow day at my grocery store one day I had the express line clerk come over and get my basket saying "I can get you over here". I said, but I have more than 10 items. She said, not many more and I don't have any customers. Even though there were no customers in that line, I wouldn't have gone through the express line because I did have over the items allowed.

I have seen cashiers do this and that's different. If they asked me I probably still wouldn't go unless I only had a few over. If I saw them ask someone to go over to them I wouldn't be bothered by them going through the express lane but I think it's rude for the customer to ask.

No, I do not do this! It drives me insane to be standing behind someone with a full cart of groceries, going through the express lane. Can you not read? Did you ride the short bus to school? Do you think you don't have to follow rules? I mean really, what are these people thinking when they do this? Oh,I know,: EXPRESS lane, this must mean that this cashier is faster than the others, and I will get out of here faster!

I agree with you. I worked in a grocery store in high school and beyond and worked from a bagger to checker to meat cutter. When i checked i would dread getting the express line. People would stand in my line and i would say im sorry im express. One day this lady with a huge cart said i just have a few things juct help me i dont want to wait in that line. I said is it fair to the other people with one or two items to wait for you? Im so happy to be out of the grocery stores lol.

I had a man cuss at me and throw his stuff on the counter and demand that I help him. He had an overflowing cart full. I refused to help him and went and got my supervisor. She checked him out and told him that he had no right speaking to me that way and that next time we would not wait on him in the express checkout unless he had the limited number of items.

I did that one time but it was a complete accident. I was in rush and went in an express lane on accident. The sign wasn't hanging on the ceiling and so I didn't see it. I didn't realize it until after I started loading my things onto the belt. I couldn't believe I did that! I told the cashier that I was sorry and that I will move to another line. I was maybe 10 items over the limit but she told me it was okay since I had half of my stuff on the belt. There was one person behind me and I let them go ahead. I was so embarrased but I would never do that on purpose. I don't know why anyone would do that on purpose. There is a reason for those lines to makes things quicker and get people out of there faster so that they don't have to wait forever.

I'll admit we've (My mother, brother, and I) Have done it a time or two when the later in the evening when there werent many people and the cashier was our friend (we knew her from church) so we would talk with her a bit... In general though I wouldn't do that. and if I was the Cashier who couldnt say it, i would simply give an evil smile/glare (I can make some pretty evil looks) and say "I'm not ALLOWED to say no." that way, they get it... I wouldn't take being cussed out though... I guess... its kinda double standard for me....or is it?

If the store is empty and there are a lot of other registers open and the cashier was a friend I might do it but otherwise I would never do it.
