Steven Gerrard tonight scored the opener and linked up with Rooney for Englands third goal against Belarus. A good game for Gerrard in a free roaming left sided role .
Hopefully this will silence the critics......

Do you know what really ruins Lampard + Gerrard partnership? The plain 4-4-2 england formation!
When both of them play as center midifielders, one of them have to stay waaaaay behind. In this case the man that most of the time stays behind is Gerrard.
We all know that he plays better when he has total freedom to attack. And in England's formation the only players that have that freedom are the wingers and one of the central midifielders (Lampard, in this case).

I think that you are right Gerrards performance has suffered because he is normally the most disiplined in his position out of the two. But it looks like Cappello had told Lampard to sit back this time and let Gerrard work his magic.
The result Gerrard scores and is man of the match.

Yeah, hopefully this will silent the critics. He's a good player but until now there have been a problem for him to find a suitable position in England team. During the past years, his combination with Lampard is never working. But now Capello choose to pair both of them again. I'm wondering whether they will perform above expectation or will continue to "sink" in the international football stage. I still believe Gerrard needs a more freedom and advance role for him to shine same as at Liverpool.
