I am not good in writing nor in speaking. I do not know why I do not have such talents. When I saw good speakers, I get jealous. I asked myself why I can't do that. When I read newspapers or magazines, there are lots of good writers. Why I am not one of them. It is very difficult for me to easily get an idea and start explaining it. Usually starting a discussion would bery very difficult. But when I have started already, it would be difficult for me to end. In writing, coherence, unity, and emphasis are very important. I do not know how to use them. Can you help me?

Being a good writer or a good speaker doesn`t only mean that you really have to be really good with it. All you need is confidence, I mean, you should really believe in your ability and in yourself that you can do it. There`s really no such rule on how to be a good writer and a good reader... you just have to be spontaneous and of course you must really know exactly your topic and what you are talking about. Also you have to give your stand about the topic and just explain all the things that you know about the topic. Again, there`s really no rule at all. It`s actually more on how would your reader or your listener would rate you. So just be confident enough in whatever you right or whatever you talk about. Because in the end, it`s them who will decide how good you are and nobody else.

I am not a good speaker, I freeze up, turn bright red, and my voice becomes a shallow whisper.
But, on the other hand, I have been told I have the gift of written words. Some people are just born to write, while others have to struggle and toils to make it work for them. There are plenty of books out there that can help you develop the talent. But the best advice I can give you is practice. Helium is a great site for beginning writers. They have a community forum where you can get advice from seasoned writers. And their system is set up where the writers rate each others' work, so ou can get a good feel for what others think of your work.
Are there exact particulars that you would like to develop? I know you stated coherence and unity, these can be focused in on by creating word webs. Start by writing down your intitial idea, then just write the first thing that comes to mind. Keep going until you run out of thoughts. Then starte back at the first idea. Keep doing this until you've filled up the page. Now you can go back and find all the similar ideas that build upon each other. Take those ideas and write them on another piece of paper. Now you have an outline to work with. I know this sounds like a lot of work to do for one piece of writing. But really, you could end up with three or four pieces from this one exercise. Try it and let me know whast you think of it.

We all look up to the Good Writers and Speakers no matter who we are, and I am sure even some of the Best ones are always listening too, or reading things to continue to give them New ideas to talk about as well. But one of the Best ways I have found to enrich my ideas to talk about, or think about, is by Reading and Writing about a lot of different things and topics as well. For me, that is one reason I enjoy being a member of myLot because it gives me a chance to enrich my thought process so much that when I now write I can talk about a lot more things as well and not feel like I do not know enough about it as well.

hi. i guess i'm a better writer than a speaker, well, in english i might add. sometimes when i speak i get jittery and i lose my ideas. that so sucks especially when i am at class and doing a freaking graded recitation. it happened to me less than 10 times and it seems like my ideas were snatched from me. haha. it's so embarrassing but most of the time i am able to express what i want to say, but it really is so hard to get all that stress while everyone is looking at me! :D
i could write some stuff about stuff :) and i think it's better because i can construct the things i want to express formally. i've had some articles, poems and short stories posted on newspapers. :)
i think in speaking, we all need confidence so we could do that right. and in writing, i think it's better to get writing classes. i mean, i only learned about it in my english classes at school and i had the greatest attention on it :)

Over the years I have begun to get better at speaking. I have written for a newspaper and have written several articles for others as well. I have been told many times that people enjoy the articles that I write. To become a better writer begin by taking tips from the articles that you read. Don't copy them but use some of their writing styles. This is how I learned and improved upon my writing over the years.

I am not a good speaker but I think I am a good writer. You can improve your writing or speaking skills. All you have to do is practice. To improve your speaking you must speak a lot, there is no other way. Similarly, to improve your writing you must write a lot. Wish you all the best!

I'm a horrible public speaker. I can remember during my school days when we would individually have to get in front of the class and quote something from a play or poem I'd often recite (in my head) that say, "Hasten, please hasten oh time in thy flight. If the bell doesn't ring, I'll have to recite." I've been told I can write, but coming up with ideas is not easy. I have a sister who can come up with all kinds of ideas, but isn't a good writer. We're a good team, she comes up with the ideas and I do the writing. Regarding your writing, if you're talking about getting ideas for myLot, just start a discussion on anything (as long as it's not forbidden). I've seen discussions here that seem bizarre but there are all sorts of responses. I've seen other discussions that I think are very thought provoking and interesting and there's hardly any response at all. One thing I would suggest for all of us on myLot, proofread before you post. There are times I think, "what is this person trying to say."

for anything to become, either a writer or a speaker or whatever it may be, you must have an interest first. develop that interest, at first you may not be appreciated, but then , when you try and try, you will certainly succeed one day. i love speaking rather then writing. i donot at all like to write that too writing long long para's . but then, i do love typing because i am a good typist. if you love writing, start writing whatever you love to write and whenever you get an idea on any topic in your diary or in any book, practise this and after few days you will yourself know your real talent. and if you want to be a good speaker, try speaking something or the other of your choice daily before the mirror, or start a discussion yourself with your brothers or sisters and try explaining the discussion, this way i think you can improve a lot, because i have improved myself with this kind of practises only and now i can speak very well. it is difficult initially but going forward it is easy and you will be happy at your performance.

I am actually very good at both speaking and writing. I normally have to get my thoughts together on paper before I can do a good job at verbalizing, but I can do it. I wasn't always good at speaking though. My mom convinced me to become a CPR and First Aid instructor a few years ago, and I learned how to peak well through teaching.

practice practice practice makes it perfect! if you want to be a good speaker, talk to yourself in the mirror, read out loud..
being a writer doesn't necessarily mean you'll be perfect when it comes to grammar, coherence, unity and emphasis on your first try. most writers write what first comes to mind in order not to disturb or lose the thought. editing and inputting coherence, emphasis and unity comes afterwards.
good luck!;o)

I feel that I am more than adequate in both categories. When public speaking, though I feel the anxiety that most people feel, I am able to compose myself and get my message across in a fairly eloquent manner. As a writer, I am extremely comfortable. I am able to express my ideas in a structured and organized manner and provide the information I have in my areas of expertise to the rest of the world.

Hey don_naces, don't feel discouraged about not having mastered yet the ability to write or speak effectively, nobody is born a master at anything, just like no one is born a doctor or lawyer, to master any specific skill you must spend the time to learn it, practice it and implement it and you will only have achieved the mastery of writing or public speaking after you have paid your due diligences in learning such skills. Those you have seen speaking with such great fluency and eloquency have spent hundreds of hours learning the great skill of public speaking. If you want to reach a high level of expertize in the art of writing and public speaking you should enrrol yourself in courses that teach you how. And you should know that those who master the art of public speaking and become effective communicators are the ones who reach the highest levels of success in just about any field of proffecional expertize they chose to go into. Good luck and good speaking.

Well I am not good both in that talent though. My sister is good in writing and I am only average with writing an speaking. I think being a good writer and speaker is in the genes but we also still have to develop it inorder for us to be very good in that field.

I believe good writers and speakers are rarely an inborn talent. Lots of these professionals undergo alot of training to be where they are now.
For me, the key to good speaking and writing is to be focus. Delivering speeches, words or otherwise require drooning on about a subject over some time and it is easy to lose your concentration and get carried away. By the time you realise that, you may be in Timbucktoo.
I am a good writer but a so-so speaker. I tend to nag if someone don't stop me LOL

Both. I write well better than I speak, but I can do both of them. That's because when I was in my school I used to watch some people talk to glory and they were always preferred for any competitions, when even though I tried my best, wasn't given a shot. Then came high school, where I changed the whole scenario. I concentrated more and and more and got better, now I'm the usual choice when they have to speak something out like host a show or address someone.
My writing skills also improved during the same time and I'm very happy that I worked on them because they are the facilities which are earning me my extra income on the internet.

i think that i am a good writer and i can influence people with my speech as well and i used to take part in debates at school and that really helped and in my writing i use a little of quotations and they make it more attractive and powerful and i know some quotes and i use them effectively.
well maybe when you admit and keep telling yourself that you are not that good to you can't do it then it won't gonna happen as you won't be motivated and your moral be down. try to build your self confidence and don't be jealous but try to learn from them and see in their writing as what they have that you don't and then work it.as for speakers the rise and falls in his/her voice are very important as they attract people attention and for writing try to make min mapping and hope that helps.

I am not a good speaker at all. And i truly admit it. Everytime there is a public speaking activity in school, i never got an excellent score but only average. I even got jealous to those person who can speak well, even on the spot. Right now I am working out with speaking for me to have speaking skills. I am very good in writing, though. Everytime i write something I always got a positive feedbacks. In our school we are asked to write an article about our trip in GMA and ABS -CBN station and one of the article that i wrote was chosen by our teacher to publish in our school newspaper, and another thing is that i also passed a poem for the literature part of the newspaper and one of my poems was chosen to be published there too. But i think what important is your speaking skills because you can easily have a job if you are good at it.

In fact, I am not a good speaker as well. Sometimes I feel very nervous and puzzled, even though I had make preparations before speaking, I don't know the reason, maybe it is origin of your characterics. One year ago, someone pushed me to overcome this kind of shortcoming by his personal mind-cure way, some good effect came to me, and from then, I gradually dare to open my mouth to talk with people freely. According to my personal experience, I consider confience is most important, if you have confidence in yourself, you can succeed in talking to others logically and freely.
