BBC producers apologize over comedy showing Filipino maid October 8, 2008 10:47 pm by pna By Gloria Jane Baylon MANILA, Oct. 8 — The producers of a comedy shown on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), which the Filipino community in England claimed had depicted Filipino domestics with a racial slur, have apologized and explained their side to the Philippine ambassador in London, Edgardo Espiritu. Tiger Aspects Production was responsible for the comedy, “Harry and Paul,” where a segment on September 29 showed a bumbling Filipino maid treated outrageously by her employers. The producers said they portray social issues in England, including those of cultural minorities in comedy style and that was their intention as well with “Harry and Paul.” There are at least 200,000 Filipinos living in the United Kingdom. Irate Filipinos protested the show and asked that BBC apologize or they will give it a silent treatment or begin an anti-BBC e-mail campaign. As a result, British Ambassador to Manila, Peter Beckingham, was summoned to the Department of Foreign Affairs by Secretary Alberto Romulo on Tuesday afternoon. At the meeting, Beckingham explained that BBC is an independent media which is outside the control loop of government. He added that despite this, government regrets the incident. He reiterated that government itself wants that the cultural values of other cultures and religions be respected. Beckingham told reporters that while some Filipinos found the segment offensive, there were those in the community that felt that “over-reaction” was wrong in that the comedy was at the expense of the British, not the Filipinos. (PNA) LAP/GJB It's funny how these people make fun one of the most decent jobs in the world. What's your take on this?

I take it as offensive for those who have been working hard abroad, doing the jobs these foreigners can't even stomach themselves, they are mistreated and no made fun of... some people are just so insensitive of other people's feelings.

Well I guess it is just right for BBC to ask for apology for their show that depicted wrongly about us. It is true that there are many in their countries that work as DH but they are not what they portrayed it on TV. Well I think we are to move this issue aside as they already have made the necessary action we Filipinos ask from them. I just hope they would be sensitive to each and everyone's culture.

I watched the clip on youtube a few weeks ago... and honestly speaking... as a Filipino... i did not find it offensive... since they were making fun of the situation and not the person... since Harry and Paul is a comedy show... i don't think people would take them seriously... A lot of shows in the US not comedy... made remarks about the Philippines which are more degrading... but then... there is reality in it... so no one complained... 1. In Boston Legal... there was a remark that any one can buy a kidney in the Philippines for $2000 or less... another is a comment about Filipino Gangs in the US... 2. Chelsea lately... one guest implied that all Filipinos are short of height... These are only some but there are a lot more...
