Baking soda is a strong base and will boil like crazy when added to full strength acid of any kind. I use it to neutralize used Nitric Acid. You must have a small amount of acid in a large container and add the soda slowly.

PS; If you can avoid it never put baking soda in hot acid. The reaction is many times stronger than it is with cold acid.

i am not sure because its quite long time as of now when i read any reaction in chemistry, but there occurs a reaction between baking soda and vinegar which produces carbon dioxide as a byproduct and i think you have placed large quantity of baking soda in the vinegar which liberates high amounts of carbon dioxide and due to high pressure it appears to be exploded.

I do not know. I have not tried doing that. This weekend I will try. I have not heard or read anything about it. Tanks for this info.

Thanks for the whys. I knew about the reaction because vinegar and baking soda is the classic recipe for making a science fair volcano. :)
